North Carolina Highway 138
North Carolina Highway 138 (NC 138) is a primary state highway in the U.S. state of North Carolina. It serves to connect the community of Aquadale, North Carolina, Aquadale to nearby Oakboro, North Carolina, Oakboro and Albemarle, North Carolina, Albemarle. Route description NC 138 is a two-lane rural highway that begins immediately after North Carolina Highway 742, NC 742 begins in downtown Oakboro. Going east, it crosses over Long Creek, a tributary of the Rocky River (North Carolina), Rocky River, then proceeds northeast to Aquadale. After crossing a railroad track in Aquadale it goes north to end at U.S. Route 52 in North Carolina, U.S. Route 52 (US 52) just south of Albemarle. History NC 138 was established in 1973 as a new primary routing from NC 742 in Oakboro, through Aquadale, to US 52/North Carolina Highway 24, NC 24/North Carolina Highway 27, NC 27/North Carolina Highway 73, NC 73 in Albemarle. Oakboro, North Carolina
Oakboro is a town in Stanly County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,859 at the 2010 census. Geography Oakboro is located at (35.229159, -80.332440). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all land. History Oakboro developed because of a predecessor of the (first) Norfolk Southern Railway. The original town started at a natural salt lick called Big Lick. When the railroad passed through in 1913, the town moved closer to the railroad and became "Furr Town". In 1915, the name was changed to Oakboro. The Oakboro Cotton Mill was a major employer in the 1940s and 1950s while cotton was still "king" of the South. Later, the mill moved across the railroad to form Stanly Knitting Mills.
