North American Star League
The North American Star League was a professional e-sports league that features the games ''StarCraft II'' and ''Heroes of Newerth''. Originally modeled after successful South Korean professional ''StarCraft'' leagues, it was founded in 2011 by Russell Pfister and Duncan Stewart. Following the mid-year departure of Stewart, Mark K. Brown was tapped to fill the position of Chief Operating Officer in August 2011, and held that position until late-2014. Origins Professional-level competition in ''StarCraft'' was originally a South Korean phenomenon that began in the early 2000s (decade). Leagues such as Starleague and GOMTV offered 24-hour television coverage and live competitions held in arena venues. However, until the formation of the NASL, North American ''StarCraft'' competitions were limited to one-off events hosted by Major League Gaming and smaller gaming associations. StarCraft II
''StarCraft II'' is a military science fiction video game created by Blizzard Entertainment as a sequel to the successful ''StarCraft'' video game released in 1998. Set in a fictional future, the game centers on a galactic struggle for dominance among the various fictional races of StarCraft. GOMTV Global StarCraft II League
Global StarCraft II League (GSL) is a '' StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void'' tournament hosted by afreecaTV and Blizzard Entertainment in South Korea. This event is broadcast up to 2 nights a week. GOMeXp (formerly GOMTV) had hosted it until the last season of 2015. There is also an English language stream available. The tournament features two leagues, Code S (major) and Code A (minor). The English cast of them is mainly performed by Dan "Artosis" Stemkoski and Nicolas "Tasteless" Plott. Formerly broadcast on Wednesdays and Saturdays on TwitchTV, the programme is now broadcast on Mondays and Thursdays on YouTube. As of the end of 2015 GSL Season 2, GOMTV has given away over 3.6 billion Korean won (over $3.1 million USD) from the individual GSL and Arena of Legends leagues in ''StarCraft II''. MBCgame Starleague
The MBCGame StarCraft League, also known as MSL, was a '' StarCraft'' tournament hosted by Korean television network MBCGame. The tournament started out in 2002 under the name of KPGA Tour, and in 2003 it was renamed the MSL. On February 1, 2012, MBCGame ceased operations and the MSL was discontinued. Throughout its lifetime, the MSL gave away the equivalent of over US$1.6 million in prize money. Park Sung-joon is a professional player of the real-time strategy game ''StarCraft''. He is known by his pseudonym July, a shortened version of JulyZerg. ''Heroes of Newerth'' (''HoN'') was a multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) video game originally developed by S2 Games for Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux. The game idea was derived from the ''Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne'' custom map ''Defense of the Ancients'' and was S2 Games' first MOBA title.
