North American 5K Championships
The North American 5K Championships, also known as the North American 5 km Team Challenge, was an annual road running competition over 5 kilometres between three North American countries: Canada, Mexico and the United States. The event was created in 2002 and held as part of the Arturo Barrios Invitational races each October in Chula Vista, California. It would be the permanent host of the competition, until the final edition in 2005. The competition had three elements: a men's 5K run, a women's 5K run, and a team competition. The team scores were decided by combining the finishing places of the top two men and top two women for each nation. The lowest overall score was the team winner. USA Track & Field (USATF) is the United States national governing body for the sports of track and field, cross country running, road running and racewalking (known as the sport of athletics outside the US). The USATF was known between 1979 and 1992 as ''The Athletics Congress'' (TAC) after its spin off from the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU), which governed the sport in the US through most of the 20th century until the Amateur Sports Act of 1978 dissolved its responsibility. Amy Yoder Begley (née Yoder; born January 11, 1978 in Topeka, Indiana) is an American middle and long-distance runner and a US Olympian in the 10,000 meter event at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. Yoder Begley lives in Atlanta, Georgia, where she is coach of the Atlanta Track Club, assisted by her husband Andrew Begley. High school career Yoder Begley attended East Noble High School in Kendallville, Indiana. She was a four-time state champion (one cross country and three 3200 meter titles) and held the 3200 meter state record from 1996 until 2011 when it was broken by Culver Academy's Waverly Neer. Malindi Elmore (born March 13, 1980 in Kelowna, British Columbia) is a Canadian track and field athlete specialising in the middle-distance events. As of January 19, 2020 she holds the Canadian record for the marathon, running a 2:24:50. She was a five-time All-American at Stanford University and holds the school record in the 800m and 1500m distances. Early Success First as a high school athlete at San Gabriel High School she excelled in both Cross Country and Track, she then went to East Los Angeles College where she not only won the 800, 1500 and 5000, but set Community College records that have lasted over 20 years. and won the California Community College Cross Country Championships in record time. Dulce María Rodríguez de la Cruz (born 14 August 1972 in Toluca) is a Mexican long-distance runner who competes in track and road running events, including the marathon. A three-time Olympian for Mexico (2000, 2004 and 2008), she has also run for Mexico at the World Championships in Athletics on three occasions. Juan Luis Barrios Nieves (born June 24, 1983) is a Mexican runner. He competed in the 5000 m at the 2008 and 2012 Olympics and finished seventh-eighth.
