North 30th Street
North 30th Street is a two-way street that runs south–north in the North Omaha area of Omaha, Nebraska. With the street beginning at Dodge Street, historically significant sections include those from Dodge to Lake Street, from Fort Street to Laurel Avenue, and from Weber to Bondesson Streets. History Twelve years before the city of Omaha was founded, Mormon pioneers built the Weber Mill at the long-time northern end of North 30th Street. The Florence Park, on North 30th Street, was the town square of Winter Quarters of the Mormon pioneers. The settlement eventually morphed into the town of Florence, and its main street was located along present-day North 30th. In 1856 town settlers built the Bank of Florence at present-day 8502 North 30th Street. Dodge Street
Dodge Street is the main east–west street in Omaha, Nebraska. Numbered as U.S. Route 6 (US 6), the street starts in Downtown Omaha and connects to West Dodge Road just west of 78th Street. From there, it continues westward through the remainder of Douglas County. About Dodge Street was named for influential Iowa Senator Augustus C. Dodge. Dodge was a strong supporter of westward expansion beyond the Missouri River to the Pacific Ocean who originally introduced the bill which led to the Kansas-Nebraska Act. Sources frequently erroneously list the street's namesake as Grenville Dodge, the chief engineer for the Union Pacific Railroad. Six miles of Dodge were paved with macadam in June 1894; however, by 1917 citizens were circulating a petition for the road to be graded. Florence Depot
The Florence Depot at 9000 North 30th Street in the Florence community of Omaha, Nebraska. Originally built in 1887 at 28th and Grebe in downtown Florence, the Depot closed in 1966. It was moved to its present location in 1971, and has been used as a historical railroad museum since 1976. The depot is operated by the Florence Historical Foundation and features exhibits about the local railroads and the depot's history. The site also features an 1890 caboose and a flat car. Mister C's Steak House was a landmark Italian restaurant located at 5319 North 30th Street in North Omaha, Nebraska. After operating for almost 55 years, the restaurant closed September 30, 2007. The mayor of Omaha and Omaha City Council declared September 18, 2007, "Mister C and Mary Caniglia Day" in honor of the owners' service to the city through the restaurant. The North Omaha Commercial Club also honored them. History Sebastiano "Yano" Caniglia's family came to Little Italy, south of downtown Omaha, Nebraska, from Carlentini, Sicily, in the early 1900s. Harry Buford House
The Harry Buford House is a historic house located at 1804 North 30th Street in North Omaha, Nebraska. Built in 1929 in a Period Revival style, it was designated a landmark by the City of Omaha in 1983. History Harry Buford was an African American associate of the political organization of city boss Tom Dennison. Reportedly, the location of the Buford House on the west side of 30th Street indicated the status of the Buford family in Omaha during a time of racial segregation.
