North-East Metropolitan Province
The North-East Metropolitan Province was a two-member electoral province of the Western Australian Legislative Council, located in metropolitan Perth. It was one of several metropolitan seats created following the enactment of the ''Constitution Acts Amendment Act (No.2) 1963'', and became effective on 22 May 1965. The province was very safe for the Labor Party, which held most or all of the component Assembly seats. In 1989, the province was abolished by the ''Acts Amendment (Electoral Reform) Act 1987'', and was split between the five-member East Metropolitan and seven-member North Metropolitan regions under the new proportional voting system. Electoral District Of Mirrabooka
Mirrabooka is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Western Australia. Geography The district is based in the northern suburbs of Perth. It includes Alexander Heights, Balga, Koondoola, Mirrabooka, Westminster and parts of Ballajura and Dianella. History The district was created for the 2013 state election, essentially as a new name for the district of Nollamara. It was won by sitting Nollamara MP Janine Freeman. An earlier incarnation of the district existed from 1968 to 1974. First contested at the 1968 state election, it was won by Doug Cash of the Liberal Party. Tom Butler (Australian Politician)
Thomas George Butler (12 September 1929 – 26 May 2006) was an Australian politician. He was born in Perth to Thomas Charles Butler, a foreman with the Water Authority, and Hilda Vera Cobbe. He attended Victoria Park and St Joachim schools before becoming a painter's apprentice in 1945, trading on his own from 1950. On 27 December 1951 he married Beatrice Coffey at Maylands; they would have five children and later have 13 grandchildren. A member of the Painters and Decorators Union (PDU), he was junior vice-president in 1960, senior vice-president from 1961 to 1962, and a full-time organiser from 1963 to 1971, when he was elected state secretary. Joe Berinson
Joseph Max Berinson (7 January 1932 – 2 June 2018) was an Australian politician who represented the Australian Labor Party (ALP) in the Australian House of Representatives and the Western Australian Legislative Council. He was Minister for the Environment in the Whitlam government for several months in 1975, later serving a decade as Attorney-General of Western Australia. Early life Berinson was born on 7 January 1932 in his family home in Highgate, Western Australia, a suburb of Perth. His parents were Shulem (Samuel) Berinson, a master baker, and Rivka (Rebecca) née Finkelstein, both of whom were Palestinian Jews from the city of Safed. Don Cooley
Donald Walter Cooley (31 July 1918 – 18 May 2007) was an Australian politician. He was an Australian Labor Party member of the Western Australian Legislative Council from 1974 to 1980, representing North-East Metropolitan Province. Cooley was born in Perth, Western Australia and was educated at Leederville Primary School and Perth Boys' School. He went to work at the Emu Brewery in 1940 before enlisting for service in World War II on 19 July 1942, serving in the 3rd Field Regiment and then the 6th Division fighting against the Japanese in Papua New Guinea. He was discharged from the military on 20 February 1946 and returned to working at the brewery. He was elected secretary of the Breweries & Bottleyards Employees Industrial Union of Workers WA in 1954 and served in that role until 1970. Lyla Elliott
Lyla Daphne Elliott (2 July 1934 – 18 February 2017) was an Australian politician who was a Labor member of the Legislative Council of Western Australia between 1971 and 1986, representing North-East Metropolitan Province. Born in Geraldton to Alvie Jean (née Fullwood) and Albert James Elliott, Elliott attended state schools in Reedy and Waroona, two small country towns where her father was employed as a machinist. She became a member of the Labor Party in 1955, and was secretary to Joe Chamberlain, the general secretary of the party's WA branch, for almost 20 years. She also undertook work for the party's National Executive and at national conferences, and was also briefly employed by the UK Labour Party. William Willesee
William Francis Willesee (26 December 1911 – 18 August 2000) was an Australian politician who served as a Labor Party member of the Legislative Council of Western Australia from 1954 to 1974. He was a minister in the government of John Tonkin. Early life Willesee was born in Adelaide, South Australia, to Ethel May (née Flinders) and William Robert Willesee. His father ran for parliament unsuccessfully on three occasions in the 1920s, while his younger brother, Don Willesee, was a senator. Moving to Western Australia as a small child, Willesee attended various schools in the country, and later studied accounting at Perth Technical College. He was employed as a clerk by the Carnarvon Municipality from 1936 to 1942, and then joined the Volunteer Defence Corps, working as a pay clerk. Ruby Hutchison
Ruby Florence Hutchison (15 February 1892 – 17 December 1974) was an Australian politician. She was a Labor Party member of the Western Australian Legislative Council from 1954 to 1971, representing Suburban Province (1954–1965) and North-East Metropolitan Province (1965–1971). Dianella was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Western Australia from 1977 to 1983 and again from 1989 to 1996. The district was based in the northern suburbs of Perth. History Dianella was first contested at the 1977 state election. The seat was won by Labor candidate Rev Keith Wilson, who became the first clergyman to win Parliamentary office since changes to the electoral laws a few years earlier which lifted a ban on them. The seat was renamed Nollamara two terms later, ahead of the 1983 state election.
