Norrköping Symphony Orchestra
The Norrköping Symphony Orchestra ( sv, Norrköpings Symfoniorkester) is a Swedish professional symphony orchestra. It is based at the concert hall De Geerhallen, in the center of Norrköping. History The orchestra was founded in 1912, and currently consists of 85 musicians. The orchestra also performs several times a year in the nearby city of Linköping. Past principal conductors have included Herbert Blomstedt and Franz Welser-Möst. Michael Francis was the orchestra's most recent chief conductor, from 2012 to 2016. Past principal guest conductors have included Leif Segerstam (1995–1997), Daniel Harding, Josep Caballé-Domenech, and Stefan Solyom. In October 2019, the orchestra announced the appointment of Karl-Heinz Steffens as its next principal conductor and artistic advisor, effective with the 2020–2021 season. Karl-Heinz Steffens
Karl-Heinz Steffens (born 28 November 1961) is a German clarinetist and conductor. For the first part of his musical career, Steffens was a solo clarinetist, and also served as principal clarinet with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Berlin Philharmonic. From 2009 to 2018, Steffens was music director of the Deutsche Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz in Ludwigshafen. During his tenure, the orchestra received such honours as the ECHO award for Best Orchestra in 2015 for their recording of works by Bernd Alois Zimmermann. Steffens was music director of the Norwegian National Opera and Ballet from 2016 to 2018. In 2017, Steffens announced his intention to stand down early from the Den Norske Opera and Ballet post, owing to conflicts with then-incoming artistic director Annilese Miskimmon. Alan Buribayev ( kz, Алан Бөрібаев, ''Alan Börıbaev''; surname also spelled Buribaev in English) (born 30 May 1979) is a Kazakh orchestral conductor. Career The son of a cellist/conductor father and a pianist mother, he studied violin and conducting at thKazakh National Conservatoryin Almaty. He was later a conducting student of Uros Lajovic in Vienna. Lü Jia (; born 1964 in Shanghai) is a Chinese-born Italian conductor. In 1991, when he was only 26, he was appointed as the Music Director of the Teatro Lirico Giuseppe Verdi and from 1991 to 1995 he was also principal conductor. Ole Kristian Ruud
Ole Kristian Ruud (born 2 October 1958) is a Norwegian conductor. Ruud was born in Lillestrøm. He studied clarinet with Richard Kjelstrup at the Norwegian Academy of Music. He studied conducting at the Sibelius Academy and made his debut in Oslo with the National theater. Ruud was principal conductor of the Trondheim Symphony Orchestra from 1987-1995 and of the Norrköping Symphony Orchestra from 1996-1999. In 1999, he became one of the Stavanger Symphony Orchestra's artistic directors, specializing in Norwegian repertoire. He has been professor of conducting at the Norwegian Academy of Music since 1999. In 1992, he was awarded the Grieg Prize, and in 1993 conducted Edvard Grieg's complete incidental music to ''Peer Gynt'' with the Philharmonia Orchestra in London's Royal Festival Hall. Junichi Hirokami
is a Japanese conductor. Born in Tokyo, Hirokami studied conducting, piano, musicology, and viola at the Tokyo College of Music. He won the first Kondrashin International Conducting Competition in Amsterdam in September 1984 at age 26. One of the judges of that competition, pianist Vladimir Ashkenazy, then engaged Hirokami to conduct the NHK Symphony Orchestra on a tour of Japan with Ashkenazy in May 1985. From 1991-1996, he was Chief Conductor of the Norrköping Symphony Orchestra. He served as Chief Conductor of the Limburg Symphony Orchestra from 1998 to 2000. Okko Kamu
Okko Tapani Kamu (born 7 March 1946, Helsinki, Finland) is a Finnish orchestral conductor and violinist. Kamu was born into a family of musicians. His father played double bass in the Helsinki Philharmonic. He began violin studies at age two and entered the Sibelius Academy at age six. He formed his own string quartet, the Suhonen, in 1964 where he played first violin. At age 20, he was appointed first solo violinist at the Finnish National Opera, and held this post until 1968. He then began to conduct, initially with the Finnish National Opera orchestra. Primarily self-taught, he became principal guest conductor of the Royal Swedish Opera in 1969, the same year as he won the first Herbert von Karajan Conducting Competition in Berlin. John Pickard (composer)
John Pickard (born 11 September 1963) is a British classical composer. Biography Pickard was born in Burnley, Lancashire, England. He studied music and composition at the University of Wales, with Welsh composer William Mathias, and later in the Netherlands with Louis Andriessen and in 1989 was awarded a PhD in composition from the University of Wales. Since 1993 he has taught at the University of Bristol, where he is Professor of Composition and Applied Musicology, and was Head of Music between 2009 and 2013, and again between 2017 and 2018.
