The Shire of Carpentaria is a local government area in Far North Queensland, Australia on the Gulf of Carpentaria, for which it is named. Geography The Shire of Carpentaria covers an area of , and has existed as a local government entity since 1883. Its two main population centres are the towns of Karumba, a fishing port, and Normanton, the administrative centre, both of which are located on the Norman River. History The Doonmunya Division was created on 11 November 1879 as one of 74 divisions around Queensland under the ''Divisional Boards Act 1879'' with a population of 396. However, the divisional board appeared to be completely inactive, perhaps because the division was so large (being the area surrounding the southern part of the Gulf of Carpentaria) and was very sparsely settled. West Wing Aviation is a Queensland based airline that was founded in 2000 and commenced operations on 2 May 2000. History The founder and CEO of the company, Peter Collings, owned airline operations running in Queensland dating back to 1992. After the company grew, Peter decided to split away from the company to start West Wing Aviation in 2000, which would provide small commute flights from the Queensland area. During the 2015 season, another Queensland based airline, Skytrans Airlines shut down on 2 January 2015. A few days later, West Wing Aviation was requested to temporarily continue the Cape York flights in Queensland in order to prevent the isolation of remote towns. Later on 23 March 2015, a deal was made that Skytrans would be purchased under the West Wing Aviation brand and would be resurrected. Mount Isa Airport is an airport serving the western Queensland city of Mount Isa, Australia. It is served by a variety of scheduled regional airlines, with flights to Brisbane, Townsville and Cairns as well as several other regional centres. The Royal Flying Doctor Service has one of its nine Queensland bases at Mount Isa Airport. Normanton is an outback town and coastal locality in the Shire of Carpentaria, Queensland, Australia. In the the locality of Normanton had a population of 1,257 people, of whom 750 (60%) identified as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people, while the town of Normanton had a population of 1,210 people, of whom 743 (62%) identified as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people. It is the administrative centre of the Shire of Carpentaria. It has a tropical savanna climate and the main economy of the locality is cattle grazing.
