Norman Jolly
Norman William Jolly (5 August 1882 – 18 May 1954) was a first-class cricketer and forester. He was South Australia's first Rhodes Scholar. Early life Norman William Jolly was born on 5 August 1882 in Mintaro, South Australia, the son of storekeeper Henry Dickson Jolly and Annie (née Lathlean). He attended Prince Alfred College and the University of Adelaide, graduating with a Bachelor of Science (BSc). In 1904, Jolly was the first South Australian to be chosen for a Rhodes Scholarship, attending Balliol College, Oxford. After graduating B.A. from Oxford with a first in natural science in 1907, Jolly studied under (Sir) William Schlich, and briefly in Europe, to obtain the Oxford diploma of forestry. Mintaro, South Australia
Mintaro is a historic town in the eastern Clare Valley, east of the Horrocks Highway, about north of Adelaide, South Australia. The town lies at the south-eastern corner of the Hundred of Clare, within the Clare Valley wine region. Established in 1849, Mintaro is situated on land which was bought originally by Joseph and Henry Gilbert, which they sub-divided into 80 allotments. Mintaro was originally intended as a stopping and resting place for the bullock teams carting copper ore from the Burra, South Australia, Burra mine to Port Wakefield, South Australia, Port Wakefield. By 1876 the population was recorded as 400. Mintaro continued to develop as a rural service centre during the 1870s and early 1880s, when pastoral and agricultural activities boomed in the state's Mid North, mid north. William Schlich
Sir Wilhelm Philipp Daniel Schlich (28 February 1840 in Flonheim – 28 September 1925 in Oxford), also known as William Schlich, was an eminent German-born forester who worked extensively in India for the British administration. As a professor at Cooper's Hill, he influenced colonial forestry across the British colonies. His major work was a five volume ''Manual of Forestry'' (1889-96). Biography William was born to Daniel Schlich and Charlotte Frank. Both parents came from Hessian families and Daniel was a Lutheran pastor or ''Kirchenrat''. His early education was at Flonheim and then at Langgöns and other schools in Hesse where the family moved. Schlich attended the Gymnasium in Darmstadt (1851). In 1855, he entered the University of Giessen, where he studied under Gustav Heyer (1826-1883). Egerton Wright
Egerton Lowndes Wright (15 November 1885 – 11 May 1918) was an English cricketer and soldier who played first-class cricket for Lancashire and Oxford University from 1905 to 1910. He was born in Chorley, Lancashire, and educated at Winchester College and New College, Oxford. He appeared in 37 first-class matches as a right-handed batsman and occasional wicketkeeper. He scored 1638 runs with a highest score of 95 and held 26 catches with three stumpings. He married Violet Shakespear in 1911. They had two children. In cricket, a batter is not out if they come out to bat in an innings and have not been dismissed by the end of an innings. The batter is also ''not out'' while their innings is still in progress. Oxford University Cricket Club (OUCC), which represents the University of Oxford, has always held first-class status since 1827 when it made its debut in the inaugural University Match between OUCC and Cambridge University Cricket Club (CUCC).
