Norma Hernández (footballer)
Norma Eugenia González Hernández (née González, born May 19, 1934) is an American mathematics educator known for her work on the educational achievements of Mexican-American students and on the factors influencing those achievements. She was dean of education at the University of Texas at El Paso. Early life and education Hernández was born on May 19, 1934, in El Paso, Texas, where her mother, Mexican-American writer and grocer Ramona González, had also been born and educated; her father was a sales clerk who had immigrated to the US from Zacatecas, Mexico. Both of her parents had a high school education, well-educated by the standards of Mexican Americans at the time. An aunt, living with them in El Paso, worked as a schoolteacher and principal in nearby Ciudad Juárez. She had three brothers and sisters, all of whom went on to professional careers. Mexican Americans ( es, mexicano-estadounidenses, , or ) are Americans of full or partial Mexican heritage. In 2019, Mexican Americans comprised 11.3% of the US population and 61.5% of all Hispanic and Latino Americans. In 2019, 71% of Mexican Americans were born in the United States, though they make up 53% of the total population of foreign-born Latino Americans and 25% of the total foreign-born population. The United States is home to the second-largest Mexican community in the world (24% of the entire Mexican-origin population of the world), behind only Mexico.
