Norheimsund Church
Norheimsund Church ( no, Norheimsund kyrkje) is a parish church of the Church of Norway in Kvam Municipality in Vestland county, Norway. It is located in the village of Norheimsund. It is one of the churches for the Vikøy parish which is part of the Hardanger og Voss prosti ( deanery) in the Diocese of Bjørgvin. The brick church was built in a long church design in 1989 using plans drawn up by the architect Peder A. Ristesund from Bergen. The church seats about 700 people. History Historically, the people of Norheimsund were part of the Vikøy Church parish, meaning the people of Norheimsund had to travel several kilometers to the church located in Vikøy. In 1985, a foundation was formed in Norheimsund with the sole purpose of trying to raise money and support for a church to be built in Norheimsund. The list of churches in Bjørgvin is a list of the Church of Norway churches in the Diocese of Bjørgvin which includes all of Vestland county in Norway. The list is divided into several sections, one for each deanery (; headed by a Provost (religion), provost) in the diocese. Administratively within each deanery, the churches are divided by municipalities each of which has their own church council () and then into parishes () which have their own councils (). Each parish may have one or more Parish church, local church. Historically, the diocese has had many deaneries, but the number of deaneries has been reduced in recent years. Per Lønning
Per Lønning (24 February 1928 – 21 August 2016) was a Norwegian Lutheran bishop and politician. Lønning received a Doctor of Theology degree from the University of Oslo in 1955 and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1958. Lønning began his career as a priest in Oslo in 1951. He also taught in a school in Oslo in 1954. From 1958 to 1965 he was elected as a member of the Norwegian Parliament for the Conservative Party of Norway. In 1964, Lønning was named the priest for the parish of Bergen. In 1969, he was named the bishop of the Diocese of Borg, a diocese that had just been created by splitting off from the large Diocese of Oslo. He was the first Bishop to lead this diocese and he served for nine years until he resigned in 1978 in protest against the passing of a law that allowed abortion on demand in Norway. Vikøy
Vikøy is a village in Kvam municipality in Vestland county, Norway. The village is located on the shore of the Hardangerfjorden, about south of the municipal centre of Norheimsund. The village has a population (2019) of 369 and a population density of . The village is the site of the Vikøy Church.
