Norberto Roldan
Norberto Roldan (born 1953 in Roxas City, Philippines) is a visual artist and curator. He is widely known for founding the artist collective Black Artists of Asia, which in turn founded the Visayas Islands Visual Arts Exhibition and Conference (VIVA ExCon). In 2000, he and choreographer Donna Miranda founded Green Papaya Art Projects. Early life and education Norberto Roldan's father and grandfather were architects. When he was eleven, his family sent him to study to become a priest. He has a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy from St. Pius X Seminary, a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Visual Communications from University of Santo Tomas, Manila, and a Master of Arts in Art Studies from University of the Philippines, Diliman. Green Papaya Art Projects
Green Papaya Art Projects (GPAP) is an independent artist-run space in Metro Manila, Philippines. Founded by artists Norberto Roldan and Donna Miranda in 2000, it aims to provide a platform that organizes and supports intellectual communication, creative dialogues, and collaboration in the contemporary art community, especially for young emerging artists in Asia. The name "Green Papaya" is a metaphor for freshness, which suggests that the art space is always in a state of becoming. Joseph Cornell
Joseph Cornell (December 24, 1903 – December 29, 1972) was an American visual artist and film-maker, one of the pioneers and most celebrated exponents of Assemblage (art), assemblage. Influenced by the Surrealists, he was also an avant-garde experimental filmmaker. He was largely self-taught in his artistic efforts, and improvised his own original style incorporating cast-off and discarded artifacts. Santi Bose
Santiago Bose (July 25, 1949 – December 3, 2002), also known as Santi Bose, was a mixed-media artist and community organizer from the Philippines who co-founded the Baguio Arts Guild. He is recognized by the Cultural Center of the Philippines as a pioneer in the use of indigenous materials. Early life and education Santiago Pavila Bose was born to Mariano Bose and Lourdes Pavila on July 25, 1949, in Baguio in the Cordillera Region of the Philippines. He attended the Mapua Institute of Technology from 1965 to 1967 for architecture, but graduated from the College of Fine Arts at the University of the Philippines Diliman in 1972. Bose furthered his art studies in the United States at the West 17th Print Workshop in New York City while in a self-imposed exile. Roberto Chabet
Roberto "Bobby" Rodríguez Chabet (March 29, 1937 - April 30, 2013) was an artist from the Philippines and widely acknowledged as the father of Philippine conceptual art. Career Chabet studied architecture at the University of Santo Tomas where he graduated in 1961. He had his first solo exhibition at the Luz Gallery in the same year. He was the founding museum director of the Cultural Center of the Philippines and served there as curator from 1967–1970. He initiated the first 13 Artists Awards, giving recognition to young artists whose works 'show a recentness, a turning away from the past and familiar modes of art-making'.
