Norair Nurikyan
Norair Nurikyan ( bg, Норайр Нурикян, hy, Նորայր Նուրիկյան; born 26 July 1948) is a former Bulgarian weightlifter of Armenian descent. He is a two-time Olympic Champion and was awarded the Hero of Socialist Labor of Bulgaria and Order of the Bulgaria, First Degree titles. In 1994, Nurikyan was inducted into the International Weightlifting Federation Hall of Fame. Early life Norair was born in Sliven, Bulgaria to Armenian parents. His father was a baker and was very strong physically. Norair believed he inherited his father's strength. Like most Armenians in Sliven, Nurikyan took violin lessons. In 1958–1959 one of his teachers, who noticed his strong looks, told him "You won't make a violinist. You'd make a boxer." The first sport Nurikyan took part in was basketball. Olympic weightlifting, or Olympic-style weightlifting (officially named Weightlifting), is a sport in which athletes compete in lifting a barbell loaded with weight plates from the ground to overhead, with each athlete trying to successfully lift the heaviest weights. Athletes compete in two specific ways of lifting the barbell overhead: these are the snatch and the clean and jerk. The ''snatch'' is a wide-grip lift, in which the weighted barbell is lifted overhead in one motion. Armenians ( bg, арменци, ''armentsi'') are the fifth largest minority, after Russians, in Bulgaria, numbering 6,552 according to the 2011 census, down from 10,832 in 2001, while Armenian organizations estimate up to 80,000. Armenians have lived in the Balkans (including the territory of modern Bulgaria) since no later than the 5th century, when they moved there as part of the Byzantine cavalry. Dimit'ri "Dito" Ivanovich Shanidze (8 February 1937 – 18 November 2010) was a Soviet Union, Soviet weightlifter. He competed and won a silver medal in the men's featherweight for both the 1968 Summer Olympics and the 1972 Summer Olympics. He was born in Derchi, Imereti, Georgia. He was also the world champion in 1972 and 1973, a silver medallist in 1968 and 1972, and a bronze medallist in 1969. He was the European champion in 1973, a silver medallist in 1968, 1969, and 1971, and a bronze medallist in 1974. He died in Tbilisi on 18 November 2010. Sofia ( ; bg, София, Sofiya, ) is the capital and largest city of Bulgaria. It is situated in the Sofia Valley at the foot of the Vitosha mountain in the western parts of the country.
