Nootka Fault
The Nootka Fault is an active transform fault running southwest from Nootka Island, near Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. Geology The Nootka Fault lies between the Explorer Plate in the north and Juan de Fuca Plate in south. These are remnants of the once vast Farallon Plate. The fault is at the triple junction of the North American, Explorer, and Juan de Fuca plates. Active Fault
An active fault is a fault that is likely to become the source of another earthquake sometime in the future. Geologists commonly consider faults to be active if there has been movement observed or evidence of seismic activity during the last 10,000 years. * Active faulting is considered to be a geologic hazard - one related to earthquakes as a cause. North American Plate
The North American Plate is a tectonic plate covering most of North America, Cuba, the Bahamas, extreme northeastern Asia, and parts of Iceland and the Azores. With an area of , it is the Earth's second largest tectonic plate, behind the Pacific Plate (which borders the plate to the west). It extends eastward to the Mid-Atlantic Ridge and westward to the Chersky Range in eastern Siberia. The plate includes both continental and oceanic crust. Maquinna (volcano)
Maquinna is an active submarine mud volcano on the British Columbia Coast, Coast of British Columbia, Canada, located west of Vancouver Island. It rises approximately above the mean level of the northeastern Pacific Ocean and lies directly along the southern expression of the left lateral, strike-slip Nootka Fault. Geology Maquinna is one of the few mud volcanoes documented in the northeast Pacific. It is across, contains a breached caldera and two small summit volcanic crater, craters. Scientific studies of Maquinna showed strong, co-registered thermal, particulate, and unusual oxygen that extends above the volcano, indicating a water column. Mud Volcano
A mud volcano or mud dome is a landform created by the eruption of mud or slurries, water and gases. Several geological processes may cause the formation of mud volcanoes. Mud volcanoes are not true igneous volcanoes as they do not produce lava and are not necessarily driven by magmatic activity. Mud volcanoes may range in size from merely 1 or 2 meters high and 1 or 2 meters wide, to 700 meters high and 10 kilometers wide. Smaller mud exudations are sometimes referred to as mud-pots. A triple junction is the point where the boundaries of three tectonic plates meet. Transform Fault
A transform fault or transform boundary, is a fault along a plate boundary where the motion is predominantly horizontal. It ends abruptly where it connects to another plate boundary, either another transform, a spreading ridge, or a subduction zone. A transform fault is a special case of a ''strike-slip fault'' that also forms a plate boundary. Most such faults are found in oceanic crust, where they accommodate the lateral offset between segments of divergent boundaries, forming a zigzag pattern. Farallon Plate
The Farallon Plate was an ancient oceanic plate. It formed one of the three main plates of Panthalassa, alongside the Phoenix Plate and Izanagi Plate, which were connected by a triple junction. The Farallon Plate began subducting under the west coast of the North American Plate—then located in modern Utah—as Pangaea broke apart and after the formation of the Pacific Plate at the centre of the triple junction during the Early Jurassic.
