Nokomis Beach Pavilion is a historic site located in Nokomis, Florida. The pavilion is Sarasota County's first beach pavilion. Nokomis, Florida
Nokomis is an unincorporated town along the Gulf Coast of Florida, United States, located south of Osprey and just north of Venice. The town has access to the coast through Nokomis Public Beach and Casey Key. The town's population was 3,167 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bradenton–Sarasota–Venice Metropolitan Statistical Area. History In 1917, Alfred F. Wrede established the first post office with the name of Nokomis southwest of the original Venice post office. The same year, orthopedic surgeon Dr. Fred Albee purchased 112 acres from the Sarasota-Venice Company. With Ellis W. Nash, Albee created the Nokomis subdivision by subdividing the property into 130 lots, with streets radiating from two inner avenue circles and the new asphalt highway, which eventually became U.S. 41. Jack West (architect)
Jack West (August 9, 1922 – October 25, 2010) was an architect in Sarasota, Florida and briefly in Southern California. West was one of the leaders of the Sarasota School of Architecture. West was born in Illinois in 1922 and served in the Pacific Ocean with the U.S. Navy during World War II. After the war, he attended Yale University School of Architecture, graduating in 1949. He moved to Sarasota and worked for the firm of Twitchell and Rudolph with Ralph Twitchell and Paul Rudolph as a draftsman and then as an architect. In 1951 West opened his own firm. From 1953 to 1954 he formed a partnership with Ralph Twitchell. From 1956 to 1960 West formed a partnership with architect Elizabeth Boylston Waters. In 1965 he joined Rolland W. Sellew to do U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development work. The Sarasota School of Architecture, sometimes called Sarasota Modern, is a regional style of post-war modern architecture (1941–1966) that emerged on Florida's Central West Coast, in and around the city of Sarasota, Florida. It is characterized by open-plan structures, often with large planes of glass to facilitate natural illumination and ventilation, that address the unique indigenous requirements of the regional climate.
