Mahalia Jackson ( ; born Mahala Jackson; October 26, 1911 – January 27, 1972) was an American gospel singer, widely considered one of the most influential vocalists of the 20th century. With a career spanning 40 years, Jackson was integral to the development and spread of gospel blues in black churches throughout the U.S. During a time when racial segregation was pervasive in American society, she met considerable and unexpected success in a recording career, selling an estimated 22 million records and performing in front of integrated and secular audiences in concert halls around the world. The granddaughter of enslaved people, Jackson was born and raised in poverty in New Orleans. She found a home in her church, leading to a lifelong dedication and singular purpose to deliver God's word through song. She moved to Chicago as an adolescent and joined the Johnson Singers, one of the earliest gospel groups. Jackson was heavily influenced by musician-composer Thomas Dorsey, and by ...

First Step (Faces Album)
''First Step'' is the debut album by the British group Faces, released in early 1970. The album was released only a few months after the Faces had formed from the ashes of the Small Faces (from which Ronnie Lane, Kenney Jones and Ian McLagan hailed) and The Jeff Beck Group (from which Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood hailed.) The album is credited to the Small Faces on all North American issues and reissues, while record labels for initial vinyl printings give the title as ''The First Step''. The album cover shows Ronnie Wood holding a copy of Geoffrey Sisley's seminal guitar tutorial ''First Step: How to Play the Guitar Plectrum Style''. While the album was recorded after the group's official formation and signing to Warner Bros. Records in the Autumn of 1969, the band members had been rehearsing, performing and recording together in various combinations since May of that year. At 46:22, ''First Step'' is the band's lengthiest original release and many modern critics regard it a ...

V (Live Album)
''V'' is the sixth studio album by the band Live, released in 2001. It featured the singles "Simple Creed" and " Overcome", the latter of which received significant exposure following the September 11 attacks. History The collection of songs that became ''V'' was never intended to be released as an album. Guitarist Chad Taylor said, "The goal was to prepare songs for the next studio session. MCA got a hold of the material and pushed us to call it an album." The songs were originally going to be released free to fans as a collection called ''Ecstatic Fanatic''. The tracks included two songs featured in films released prior to the release of ''V'', "Forever May Not Be Long Enough", written for the closing credits of ''The Mummy Returns'', and "Deep Enough", which appears in the opening of ''The Fast and the Furious'' because director Rob Cohen was a fan of Live. Taylor would later express dismay at the label's disinterest in promoting those two songs, particularly in light of the ...

Living Years
''Living Years'' is the second album by Mike + The Mechanics, released in 1988. The album reached number 13 on the US ''Billboard'' 200 and number 2 on the UK Albums Chart. History Mike Rutherford began writing songs for the album in September 1987, shortly after the conclusion of Genesis's Invisible Touch Tour. However, he found himself immediately stricken with writer's block, a circumstance he attributes to stress over the complications with his wife's pregnancy, which endangered their child's life. In January he entered an extremely prolific songwriting period, and by the end of the month he had what he and producer/co-writer Christopher Neil felt was a good album's worth of material. In light of this, Neil wanted to move up the recording sessions, which had been scheduled for April. Rutherford vetoed the idea, however, and with his burst of ...
