No Rain, No Rose
''No Rain, No Rose'' is the fifth studio album by folk singer-songwriter John Craigie. It was released on January 27, 2017, and recorded in his living room in Portland, Oregon, with the help of other well-known musicians around Portland such as the Shook Twins and Gregory Alan Isakov. This album describes John Craigie's life as a traveling musician and explores the sense of home that he found in Portland after moving from Los Angeles. The comical banter heard within the tracks demonstrate some of the album's influence from Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's 1972 album ''Will the Circle be Unbroken''. Other influences include The Rolling Stones with the album's folksy cover of "Tumbling Dice". The title of the album comes from the old Buddhist saying "No mud, no lotus", meaning bad things are necessary in order for good things to happen. John Craigie (born June 15, 1980) is an American singer-songwriter and storyteller. Hailed as a "Modern-Day Troubadour" in the style of Woody Guthrie, Craigie's comedic storytelling style has been compared to Mitch Hedberg, while his music and commitment to living on the road has drawn comparisons to Guthrie, Ramblin' Jack Elliott and Pete Seeger. ''Scarecrow'' is the sixth studio album released by John Craigie. The album started out as a vinyl-only release in April 2018, but was eventually released on Spotify, iTunes, and other digital platforms on May 18, 2018. The album was self-produced by John Craigie. Craigie was said to have said that all of the songs on this album were written for his fifth studio album, '' No Rain, No Rose'', but did not make the cut on the album, so the songs ended up on ''Scarecrow''. Shook Twins is a folk music group originally from Sandpoint, Idaho and currently based in Portland, Oregon, formed in 2004. The nucleus of the band consists of identical twin sisters Katelyn (guitar, mandolin, banjo, glockenspiel, telephone microphone) and Laurie Shook (banjo, guitar, tambourine, golden egg). Gregory Alan Isakov (born October 19, 1979) is a South African-born singer-songwriter currently based in Boulder, Colorado. He and his family immigrated to the United States in 1986 and he was raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Isakov's music combines indie and folk, featuring instruments such as the guitar and banjo. He is widely known for the songs "Words", "The Stable Song", "Big Black Car", "If I Go, I'm Goin" and "San Luis". Isakov has released seven albums, most recently ''Evening Machines'' in October 2018. The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band is an American country rock band formed in 1966. The group has existed in various forms since its founding in Long Beach, California.
