No Mercy (2016)
The 2016 No Mercy was the 12th No Mercy professional wrestling pay-per-view (PPV) and livestreaming event produced by WWE. It was held exclusively for wrestlers from the promotion's SmackDown brand division. The event took place on October 9, 2016, at the Golden 1 Center in Sacramento, California. It was the first No Mercy held since 2008 and it was also the first SmackDown-exclusive No Mercy since 2006. This also made it the first No Mercy to air on WWE's online streaming service, the WWE Network, which launched in 2014. Unlike the majority of WWE's PPVs, No Mercy 2016 was not released on DVD or Blu-Ray. Eight matches were contested at the event, including one on the Kickoff pre-show. WWE Hell in a Cell is a professional wrestling event produced annually by WWE, a Connecticut-based professional wrestling promotion. It is broadcast live and available only through pay-per-view (PPV) and the livestreaming services Peacock and the WWE Network. First held in 2009, the concept of the show comes from WWE's established Hell in a Cell match, in which competitors fight inside a 20-foot-high roofed cell structure surrounding the ring and ringside area. Each main event match of the card is contested under the Hell in a Cell stipulation, while one or two other Hell in a Cell matches may occur on the undercard. The 1999 No Mercy held in the United States was the second No Mercy professional wrestling pay-per-view (PPV) event produced by the World Wrestling Federation (WWF, now WWE). It took place on October 17, 1999, at the Gund Arena in Cleveland, Ohio. While the previous No Mercy event was held exclusively for the United Kingdom and held in May, this event was moved to the United States and established No Mercy as the annual October PPV until 2008. Nine matches, including three championship matches, took place at the event. In the first, The Fabulous Moolah won the WWF Women's Championship from Ivory to become the oldest champion in professional wrestling history at the time. The 1999 No Mercy held in the United Kingdom was the inaugural No Mercy professional wrestling pay-per-view (PPV) event produced by the American promotion, World Wrestling Federation (WWF, now WWE). It took place on May 16, 1999, at the Manchester Evening News Arena in Manchester, England and was broadcast exclusively for the United Kingdom. It was the only No Mercy held in the United Kingdom, as beginning with the October 1999 event, all further No Mercy events were held in the United States. During this time, the pay-per-view market was relatively new to Britain, as before 1997, all pay-per-view events were broadcast for free on Sky Sports. The WWE Intercontinental Championship is a professional wrestling championship created and promoted by the American promotion WWE, currently defended on the SmackDown brand division. It is one of two secondary championships for WWE's main roster, along with the WWE United States Championship on Raw. The current champion is Gunther, who is in his first reign.
