Christopher Barry
Christopher Chisholm Barry (20 September 1925 – 7 February 2014) was a British television director. He worked extensively in BBC television drama and became best known for his work on the science fiction series ''Doctor Who''. He also directed the direct to video ''Doctor Who'' spin-off ''Downtime'' in 1995. Early life and education Barry attended the University of Cambridge and served in the Royal Air Force. Career Barry became a trainee at Ealing Studios and worked on the film ''The Ship That Died of Shame'' (1955) as an assistant director to Basil Dearden. He subsequently joined the BBC as a production assistant in 1955. In 1963 Barry was asked by producer Verity Lambert to be one of the initial directors of the BBC's new science fiction television series ''Doctor Who''. Barry's work on ''Doctor Who'' went on to cover the longest span of any director during the original run of the series, overseeing episodes until 1979. Armine Sandford
Armine Margaret Sandford (1928 – 4 January 2011) was an English actress and news presenter Born in St Germans, Cornwall, Sandford was the daughter of a physician who practised at Exeter.Patrick Robertson, ''The Book of Firsts'' (1975), p. 181 In 1950 she appeared in a stage revival of ''Doctor Faustus (play), Doctor Faustus'', and during an acting career on screen she appeared in the films ''A Town Like Alice (1956 film), A Town Like Alice'' (1956), ''A Picture of Autumn'' (1957) and Virtuoso (film), ''Virtuoso'' (1959), and continued to appear in television programmes until about 1966. On 30 September 1957, Sandford became the first woman television newsreader when she joined the BBC West Region's daily television news bulletin from its studios in Bristol. She died in 2011 in Leicester, aged 82. Norman Mitchell
Norman Mitchell Driver (27 August 1918 – 19 March 2001), known professionally as Norman Mitchell, was an English television, stage and film actor. Born in Sheffield, West Riding of Yorkshire, his father was a mining engineer and his mother a concert singer. He attended Carterknowle Grammar School and the University of Sheffield, before appearing in repertory theatre and with the Royal Shakespeare Company. During World War II he served with the Royal Army Medical Corps. He then made many television appearances and appeared in over sixty films. Mitchell was married to actress Pauline Mitchell until her death in 1992. He was the father of Jacqueline Mitchell and actor Christopher Mitchell, known for his role in the BBC sitcom ''It Ain't Half Hot Mum''. His son Christopher predeceased him by a month. Clifford Christopher Cocks (born 28 December 1950) is a British mathematician and cryptographer. In 1973, while working at the United Kingdom Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ), he invented a public-key cryptography algorithm equivalent to what would become (in 1977) the RSA algorithm. The idea was classified information and his insight remained hidden for 24 years, although it was independently invented by Ronald Rivest, Adi Shamir, and Leonard Adleman in 1977. Public-key cryptography using prime factorisation is now part of nearly every Internet transaction. Education Cocks was educated at Manchester Grammar School and went on to study the Mathematical Tripos as an undergraduate at King's College, Cambridge. Rio Fanning (7 November 1931 – 12 August 2018) was a Northern Irish actor and writer. Theatre Raised in Tralee, he made his debut appearing in school plays and pageants produced by his father. As an adult, he trained at the London School of Dramatic Art. Fanning began appearing in repertory theatre in late 1954 in Lancashire. Among these roles was playing Walter Darvel in Alan Melville's play ''Dear Charles'' at Royalty Theatre, Morecambe. Patrick George Troughton (; 25 March 1920 – 28 March 1987) was an English actor who was classically trained for the stage but became known for his roles in television and film. His work included appearances in several fantasy, science fiction and horror films, and playing the Second Doctor, second incarnation of The Doctor (Doctor Who), the Doctor in the long-running British science fiction on television, science-fiction television series ''Doctor Who'' from 1966 to 1969; he reprised the role in 1972–1973, 1983 and 1985. William Leo Franklyn (22 September 1925 – 31 October 2006) was a British actor, perhaps best known for voicing the "Schhh... You Know Who" adverts for Schweppes from 1965 to 1973. He also performed on stage, film, television and radio, taking over from Peter Jones as "The Book" (the narrator) in the third, fourth and fifth radio series of ''The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy''. Cyril Luckham
Cyril Alexander Garland Luckham (25 July 1907 – 8 February 1989) was an English film, television and theatre actor. He was the husband of stage and screen actress Violet Lamb. Career The son of a paymaster captain in the Royal Navy, Cyril Luckham was educated at RNC Osborne and Dartmouth and briefly followed his father into the service. He was promoted Lieutenant in 1930 and retired the following year, transferring to the Emergency List. Afterwards he trained for the stage with the Arthur Brough school at Folkestone, making his debut with Brough's company there in ''The Admirable Crichton'' in 1935. For several years he appeared in provincial repertory, notably with the Rapier Players at Bristol's Little Theatre. He had been promoted to Lieutenant-Commander on the retired list in 1938 and was recalled to the Navy when the War broke out.
