No. 16 Group RAF
No. 16 Group RAF was a Royal Air Force groups. It has existed over two periods in to different roles. First, No. 16 Group was a training group from 1918 to 1920 that had been transferred from the Royal Flying Corps. Secondly, it was a reconnaissance group formed under RAF Coastal Command in 1936. With the creation of the RAF as a new service, No. 16 Group was established at Fossgate in York on 1 April 1918. This was done by re-designating the Royal Flying Corps's Northern Training Brigade as No. 16 Group. The training role was continued. Hugh Dowding
Air Chief Marshal Hugh Caswall Tremenheere Dowding, 1st Baron Dowding, (24 April 1882 – 15 February 1970) was an officer in the Royal Air Force. He was Air Officer Commanding RAF Fighter Command during the Battle of Britain and is generally credited with playing a crucial role in Britain's defence, and hence, the defeat of Adolf Hitler's plan to invade Britain. Born in Moffat, Scotland, Dowding was an officer in the British Army in the 1900s and early 1910s. He joined the Royal Flying Corps at the start of the First World War and went on to serve as a fighter pilot and then as commanding officer of No. 16 Squadron. Air Marshal Sir Brian Edmund Baker (31 August 1896 – 8 October 1979), was an officer of the Royal Air Force who served in both World Wars. He was a flying ace in World War I credited, in conjunction with his gunners, with twelve victories, comprising one enemy aircraft captured, four destroyed (including one shared), and seven "out of control" (including one shared). Biography Baker was educated at Haileybury College between 1910 and 1914. World War I On 9 January 1915 Baker received a commission as a temporary second lieutenant, in the 15th (Service) Battalion of the Rifle Brigade. Air Vice Marshal Reginald Leonard George Marix, (17 August 1889 – 7 January 1966) was a British aviator, originally with the Royal Naval Air Service, who later reached air officer rank in the Royal Air Force. He is credited with being the first pilot to destroy a Zeppelin, when in October 1914 he bombed the airship sheds at Düsseldorf. Air Vice Marshal Henry Meyrick Cave-Browne-Cave (1 February 1887 – 5 August 1965), was an engineering officer in the Royal Naval Air Service during the First World War and senior commander in the Royal Air Force during the 1930s. He was prominent in the development of seaplanes and, following the armistice, flying boats. John Becke
Brigadier general John Harold Whitworth Becke, (17 September 1879 – 7 February 1949) was an infantry officer in the Second Boer War and squadron, wing and brigade commander in the Royal Flying Corps during World War I.
