Njoki Ngumi
Njoki Ngumi is a Kenyan filmmaker and doctor. As a member of arts collaborative The Nest Collective, Ngumi has been involved in film, music and other art projects in Kenya. She is the screenwriter of ''Stories of Our Lives'', a 2014 film recounting the experiences of LGBT Kenyans that was awarded the Teddy Award Jury Prize in 2015. Ngumi was also involved in the #MyAlwaysExperience Twitter protest, claiming multinational companies produce substandard feminine products for the Kenyan market. ''Stories of Our Lives'' is a Kenyan film, released in 2014. Created by the members of The Nest Collective, a Nairobi-based arts collective, the film is an anthology of five short films dramatizing true stories of LGBT life in Kenya. Plot The five vignettes that make up the film are as follows: Ask Me Nicely Kate (Kelly Gichohi), a rebellious young high school student—encounters Faith, a fellow student in the school corridors. They begin a secret relationship, until the school principal takes action to separate the two by suspending Kate from the school. While away from the school, Kate impulsively has a sexual encounter with a boy in her neighborhood. Upon her return, Kate tells Faith about the encounter with the boy. This annoys Faith, leading to an end of their relationship. The Teddy Award is an international film award for films with LGBT topics, presented by an independent jury as an official award of the Berlin International Film Festival (the Berlinale). In the most part, the jury consists of organisers of gay and lesbian film festivals, who view films screened in all sections of the Berlinale; films do not have to have been part of the festival's official competition stream to be eligible for Teddy awards. The Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) is a government agency responsible for governing and maintaining the standards and practices of metrology in Kenya.
