Nive, Queensland
Nive is a locality in the Shire of Murweh, Queensland, Australia. In the , Nive had a population of 34 people. History The locality takes its name from the Nive River. The river in turn was named by Sir Thomas Mitchell, the New South Wales Surveyor-General, on 13 September 1846, after the Nive River in south western France, where Lord Wellington engaged in the Battle of the Nive in the Peninsula War in 1813. Nive Downs was a huge sheep station that was broken up into home blocks and allocated to returned servicemen in a ballot after the 2nd world war. The Duttons sold Nive Downs in 1866 and awarded a breastplate to Paddy, King of Nive Downs for the service of his tribe. Paddy was likely a Wadjalang man. The breastplate is now in the National museum of Australia. Road infrastructure The Landsborough Highway runs through from south to north. Education There are no schools in Nive. Warrego is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Queensland. The electorate lies in the extreme southwest of Queensland, running along the western part of the border with New South Wales. It includes the large town of Dalby, as well as the rural centres of Surat, Roma, Tara, Charleville, Augathella, St George and Cunnamulla. History The electoral district of Warrego was created by the ''Additional Members Act of 1864'' which introduced six new single-member electorates. A by-election was held to fill the seat. The nomination date was 18 March 1865 and the election was held on 25 March 1865. Warrego was, as with the rest of the state, held by independents and loose groupings of members around the government of the day until the first years of the twentieth century, when the partisan system took hold. Thomas Mitchell (explorer)
Sir Thomas Livingstone Mitchell (15 June 1792 – 5 October 1855), surveyor and explorer of Southeastern Australia, was born at Grangemouth in Stirlingshire, Scotland. In 1827 he took up an appointment as Assistant Surveyor General of New South Wales. The following year he became Surveyor General and remained in this position until his death. Mitchell was knighted in 1839 for his contribution to the surveying of Australia. Early life Born in Scotland on 15 June 1792, he was son of John Mitchell of Carron Works and was brought up from childhood by his uncle, Thomas Livingstone of Parkhall, Stirlingshire. The Battles of the Nive (9–13 December 1813) were fought towards the end of the Peninsular War. Arthur Wellesley, Marquess of Wellington's Anglo-Portuguese and Spanish army defeated Marshal Nicolas Soult's French army on French soil in a series of battles near the city of Bayonne. Unusually, for most of the battle, Wellington remained with the Reserve delegating command to his senior Lieutenant-Generals Rowland Hill and John Hope.
