Anna Nitschmann
Anna Caritas Nitschmann, Countess von Zinzendorf und Pottendorf, (24 November 1715, Kunín, Moravia – 21 May 1760, Herrnhut, Lusatia) was a Moravian Brethren missionary (''Missionarin''), lyrical poet, and the second wife of Count Nicolaus Ludwig Zinzendorf. By virtue of her marriage, she became a member of the House of Zinzendorf, one of the most prominent noble families in the region. Biography Born as the younger daughter of David Nitschmann (1676-1758) and his wife, Anna Schneider (1680-1735), she served as the Chief Eldress of the Renewed Moravian Church for most of her life, from the age of 14. Her duties as Chief Eldress were to serve as a spiritual mentor and counsellor to the female members of the congregations. Most of her life was spent in close connection with the Zinzendorf household, although a couple of years were spent doing itinerant mission work among the women of southeastern Pennsylvania. David Nitschmann der Wagner, or David "Father" Nitschmann Sr., (1676, Zauchtenthal/ Suchdol nad Odrou - 1758, Pennsylvania) was a Czech-born Moravian missionary and carpenter. Biography Born in Zauchtenthal, Moravia, on September 18, 1676, David Nitschmann was a son of Johannes Nitschmann and Catharina (Friedrickin) Nitschmann. Following the death of his parents in 1692, he continued to reside in Moravia. On November 15, 1700, he wed Anna Schneider, a daughter of Andreas Schneider. The marriage would last thirty-five years. Sometimes referred to as "Father" David Nitschmann, to distinguish him from other famous David Nitschmanns, he was the father of Anna Nitschmann, second wife of Count Zinzendorf. Tradition has it that Zinzendorf unofficially adopted him as his father. Nitschmann moved to Herrnhut in 1725. David Nitschmann der Bischof (David Nitschmann the Bishop, December 18, 1695/96, Suchdol nad Odrou, Moravia – October 8, 1772, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania) was with Johann Leonhard Dober one of the two first missionaries of the Moravian Brethren in the West Indies in 1732, and the first Bishop of the Renewed Unitas Fratrum, the Moravian Church. Life In 1735 in Berlin, he was consecrated the first Bishop of the Renewed Unitas Fratrum, Moravians by Daniel Ernst Jablonski, Grandson of John Amos Comenius, the last Bishop of the Ancient Unitas Fratrum. He landed at Philadelphia, in 1741 and was instrumental in the founding of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania where he died in 1772.
