Nish Selvadurai
Nishan "Nish" Selvadurai (born 10 September 1978) is an Australian comedian of Sri Lankan descent, living in Brisbane. Career Nish first performed stand-up in 2004. In 2005, he won the Queensland State Final of the FHM Cougar Rum Search for Australia's Funniest Man competition. In 2006, he had his television debut on Network 10 and the Comedy Channel for the FHM Cougar Rum Search for Australia's Funniest Man competition. In March 2007, he enjoyed his first month as a full-time professional comedian. He was the warm up act for George Kapiniaris's Adelaide Fringe Festival show "Trevor". He then joined the touring comedy group Il Dago. Il Dago began at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival in April 2007. Stand-up Comedy
Stand-up comedy is a comedic performance to a live audience in which the performer addresses the audience directly from the stage. The performer is known as a comedian, a comic or a stand-up. Stand-up comedy consists of one-liners, stories, observations or a shtick that may incorporate props, music, magic tricks or ventriloquism. It can be performed almost anywhere, including comedy clubs, comedy festivals, bars, nightclubs, colleges or theatres. History Stand-up as a Western art form has its roots in the stump speech of American minstrel shows, which featured an actor in blackface delivering nonsensical monologue to the audience. While the intention of stump speeches was to mock African-Americans, they also occasionally contained political and social satire. Joe Avati (born 1974) is an Italian-Australian comedian who is popular among Italian and descendant of Italians from his native Australia, as well as in Canada, United Kingdom and the United States, where he has performed on several occasions. Early life Born in 1974, Avati is the son of a banquet hall owner and was considered a "quiet" child. He grew up in Five Dock, Sydney, Australia. His parents are from Calabria, Italy and some of his shows are performed in the Calabrese dialect, in English with or without a Calabrese accent. Avati studied food science at university in Sydney, graduating second in his year. George Kapiniaris is an Australian stage, television and film actor and comedian. He is of Greek descent and is best known for his role in popular sitcom ''Acropolis Now'' and composed the series' theme song. ''Thank God You're Here'' is an Australian television improvised comedy program created by Working Dog Productions, which premiered on Network Ten on 5 April 2006, and aired for the first three seasons and on Seven for the fourth season. Each episode involves performers walking through a door into an unknown situation, greeted by the line "Thank God you're here!". They then had to improvise their way through the scene. At the end of each episode a winner was announced. It was the most successful new show in Australia of 2006, attracting an average of 1.7 million viewers after the first few episodes.
