Nippes, Cologne
Nippes (; ) is the fifth borough (') of Cologne, Germany. Nippes was incorporated into the city of Cologne in 1888 and the district was created in 1975. A large Ford Europe production plant is located in Niehl, the north-eastern part of the district. Nippes borders the Cologne boroughs of Chorweiler to the north, Mülheim to the east, Innenstadt to the south, and Ehrenfeld to the south-west. Subdivisions Nippes consists of seven Stadtteile (city parts): Transport Nippes is served by numerous railway stations and main highways. Stations include Köln-Nippes, Köln Geldernstraße/Parkgürtel, and Köln-Longerich, as well as numerous light rail stations on Cologne Stadtbahn lines 12, 15, 16, and 18. The Cologne-Weidenpesch Racecourse (''Galopprennbahn Köln-Weidenpesch'') is a horse racing track at Weidenpescher Park in Nippes, Cologne. Gabriele Wilhelmine "Gaby" Köster () is a German actress and comedian. Life Köster was born in Cologne, West Germany. Following secondary school, Köster began training to become a nursery-school teacher, which she broke off three weeks prior to completion. She then dedicated herself to music and painting, and some of her paintings were shown in exhibitions. To keep her head above water financially, she also worked in a bar where, in 1987, she met Jürgen Becker. Becker asked her to write a few sketches for a radio programme. Köster thought the guest was crazy but still wrote a sketch. She was surprised when the text she had submitted was actually used on the German radio station WDR in the programme ''Unterhaltung am Wochenende'', broadcast on Saturdays between 4 and 6 pm. Fritz Schramma is a German politician of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU). He was mayor of Cologne from 2000 until 2009. Cologne Beltway
The Cologne Beltway (German:''Kölner Autobahnring'') is the collective term for the Autobahns encircling Cologne. It consists of the Bundesautobahn 1, the Bundesautobahn 3 and the Bundesautobahn 4. Segments of the beltway handle the highest traffic volume in Germany. The Autobahns on the beltway cross Bundesautobahn 559, Bundesautobahn 555 and Bundesautobahn 57. The Bundesautobahn 59 is tied to the beltway at the interchange Leverkusen-West in the north and to ''Dreieck'' Heumar in the south. History The beltway was constructed in a clockwise fashion beginning at Leverkusen. In 1936 the section between Leverkusen and Cologne-Mülheim was built as a component of the Autobahn Oberhausen- Wiesbaden and in 1937 the section to Siegburg was finished. Bundesautobahn 57
is a German Autobahn that begins at the Dutch-German border near Goch and ends in Köln. It runs parallel to the Rhine River. Neuss and Krefeld are the biggest cities at this motorway. The A 57 is continuation of the Dutch A77. Because of its high economic importance, its nickname is "Trans-Niederrhein-Magistrale". Most of it is two lanes each way only and prone to traffic jams in the rush hour. Currently the sections junction 15 - 18, 19 - 24 and 29 - 30 have three lanes each way. The section from junction 28 to 29 southbound has the possibility to open the hard shoulder as a third lane in heavy traffic. Traffic jams are possible between junctions 10 and 15, 17 and 20 as well as around junctions 27/28. There is a variable speed limit between junction 10 and 23. The sections from junction 23 to 24 and 27 to 30 have a limit of 100 km/h. Between junctions 27 and 28 the limit was reduced to 80 km/h between 10pm and 6am at night. The Cologne Stadtbahn is a light rail system in the German city of Cologne, including several surrounding cities of the Cologne Bonn Region (Bergisch Gladbach, Bonn, Bornheim, Brühl, Frechen, Hürth, Leverkusen-Schlebusch, Wesseling). The term ''Stadtbahn'' denotes a system that encompasses elements of trams as well as an underground railway network (''U-Bahn'') and interurban rail, even including three lines that are licensed as heavy rail and used by freight trains as well as Stadtbahn vehicles. Two of these lines connect the Cologne Stadtbahn to the Bonn Stadtbahn.
