Nipomo (; Chumash: ''Nipumuʔ'') is a unincorporated town in San Luis Obispo County, California, United States. The population was 16,714 for the 2010 census and grew to 18,176 for the 2020 census. For statistical purposes, the United States Census Bureau has defined Nipomo as a census-designated place (CDP). Name The name is the Spanish transliteration of the Obispeño Chumash place name ''Nipumuʔ'', meaning "place of the big house" or "village". History The original settlers of Nipomo were the Chumash Indians, who have lived in the area for over 9,000 years. Rancho Nipomo (the Indian word ''ne-po-mah'' meant "foot of the hill") was one of the first and largest of the Mexican land grants in San Luis Obispo County. William G. Rancho Nipomo was a Ranchos of California, Mexican land grant in present day San Luis Obispo County, California given in 1837 by Governor Juan B. Alvarado to William Goodwin Dana. The grant encompassed present day Nipomo, California, Nipomo. The ranch is designated as a California Historical Landmark. History William Goodwin Dana (May 5, 1797 – Feb 11, 1858) was born in Boston. Captain Dana went to sea early in life and arrived in Santa Barbara, California, Santa Barbara in 1825. He married Maria Josefa Carrillo, daughter of Carlos Antonio Carrillo in 1828. In 1836, Dana was alcalde of Santa Barbara. Dana was granted Rancho Nipomo in 1837. The family moved to Nipomo in 1839. Dana Adobe
The Dana Adobe & Cultural Center or "Casa de Dana" is a historic landmark in Nipomo, California. It was the home of Boston sea captain William Dana, who in 1837 was granted the Rancho Nipomo in Southern California. Captain Dana hosted figures such as Henry Tefft and John C. Fremont in his Nipomo home, which also served as an important exchange point on California's first official mail route between Monterey and Los Angeles.
