Nils Jacobsen
Nils Peter Jacobsen is an American historian specializing in the history of Peru. He is an associate professor of History and Global Studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Jacobsen's work has focused on the area of comparative rural history, the general history of the Andes region, as well as the social and economic history of Peru. He also served as a Santo Domingo Visiting Scholar at the David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies at Harvard University. He is the author of ''Mirages of Transition: The Peruvian Altiplano, 1780-1930'' and ''Political Cultures in the Andes, 1750-1950''. He received his Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley. His dissertation was entitled "Landtenure and Society in the Peruvian Altiplano: Azangaro Province, 1770-1920". History Of Peru
The history of Peru spans 10 millennia, extending back through several stages of cultural development along the country's desert coastline and in the Andes mountains. Peru's coast was home to the Norte Chico civilization, the oldest civilization in the Americas and one of the six cradles of civilization in the world. When the Spanish arrived in the sixteenth century, Peru was the homeland of the highland Inca Empire, the largest and most advanced state in pre-Columbian America. After the conquest of the Incas, the Spanish Empire established a Viceroyalty of Peru, Viceroyalty with jurisdiction over most of its South American domains. Peru declared Independence of Peru, independence from Spain in 1821, but achieved independence only after the Battle of Ayacucho three years later. Sinclair Thomson
Sinclair Thomson (25 December 1915 – 24 July 1983) was a Scottish painter, born in Glasgow, Scotland. He won the Guthrie Award in 1948 with his oil painting ''The White Shawl''. Life Sinclair Thomson was born in 1915 in Govanhill, Glasgow. His father was Donald Thomson (20 December 1878 - 25 July 1952) and his mother was Diana Sinclair Sutherland (2 May 1879 - 3 July 1947). They married in Lanark in 1904. They had four sons, including Sinclair; and one daughter Diana who did not survive infancy. Thomson went to school at Allan Glen's School then at Townhead in the city of Glasgow. While there he suffered a rugby injury, injuring his knee, which led to the amputation of his leg at the age of 16. Olivia Jane Harris (26 August 1948 – 9 April 2009) was a British social anthropologist whose work focused on the study of the Bolivian highlands. Her writing includes analyses of fertility, gender, money, conceptions of work and of time, the relation between law and custom, as well as the Inca and Spanish colonisation of current-day Bolivia. Early life and education Olivia Jane Harris was born on 26 August 1948 and read classics at St Anne's College, Oxford. She moved on to become a post-graduate student at the London School of Economics (LSE) anthropology department.
