D'Arcy Niland
D'Arcy Francis Niland (20 October 191729 March 1967) was an Australian farm labourer, novelist and short story writer. In 1955 he wrote '' The Shiralee'', which gained international recognition in its depictions of the experiences of a swagman and his four-year-old daughter. It was made into a 1957 film, starring Peter Finch, and a 1987 TV mini-series, starring Bryan Brown. Niland married fellow writer Ruth Park (1917–2010) on 11 May 1942 and the couple had five children: Anne (born ca. June 1943), Rory, Patrick and twin daughters, Kilmeny (1950–2009) and Deborah (1950–present). Niland died on 29 March 1967 of a myocardial infarction, aged 49. Conor Niland
Conor Niland (born 19 September 1981) is an Irish former professional tennis player. He was born in Birmingham, England, and grew up in Limerick, Ireland. He attended St. Nessan's National School in Mungret, Co. Limerick, before moving on to Crescent College Comprehensive in Dooradoyle, Co. Limerick. He was the highest ranked Irish tennis player during his career. He played for the Ireland Davis Cup team from 2000 to 2012. He officially announced his retirement from tennis on 12 April 2012 due to a recurring hip injury. In a statement Niland said: "I am today sadly announcing my retirement from professional tennis. I have been suffering from labral tears in both hip cartilages and this has resulted in pain and restricted movement for the past nine months." Deborah Mary Niland (born 1950) is a New Zealand–born Australian artist, known as a writer and illustrator of children's books. Some of her most popular books include ''Annie's Chair'', ''When The Wind Changed'', ''Mulga Bill's Bicycle'', and ''Chatterbox''. In 2006 she won The Children's Book of the Year – Early Childhood, with her book ''Annie's Chair''. Kilmeny Niland
Kilmeny Niland (1950 – 27 February 2009) was a New Zealand–born Australian artist and illustrator. While best known for her children's book illustrations, she worked in a wide range of genres, including animation, wildlife art, miniatures, portraits, cards and prints. She won numerous prizes in national and international competitions, and one of her portraits was purchased by Australia's National Portrait Gallery, in Canberra. With her twin sister Deborah, she illustrated a children's version of Banjo Paterson's poem ''Mulga Bill's Bicycle''. The Model, home of the Niland Collection, formerly called Model Arts and Niland Gallery, is a contemporary arts centre and gallery space in Sligo, Ireland. The gallery houses several exhibition spaces focusing on contemporary art and education activities, a cinema/venue for concerts, an artist-in-residence programme, and a collection of 20th-century Irish art called the Niland Collection. This collection is named for the former Sligo County librarian, Nora Niland. Building Use as school Located on the Mall in Sligo town, north of the Garavogue river, The Model was designed by architect James Owen for the then Board of Works. It is a detached multiple-bay, two-storey rubble and ashlar stone building in the Italianate Palazzo style. John Hugh Niland (born February 29, 1944) is a former American football offensive guard in the National Football League (NFL) for the Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles. He was a six-time Pro Bowler and a three-time All-Pro. He played college football at the University of Iowa. In 2021, the Professional Football Researchers Association named Niland to the PFRA Hall of Very Good Class of 2021 Early years Niland was raised by his adopted family and attended Amityville Memorial High School, where he was an All-State fullback. John Rodney Niland (born 10 September 1940) is an Australians, Australian academic and board director. Niland obtained a Bachelor and Master of Commerce from UNSW and his PhD is from the University of Illinois. He has held academic positions at Cornell University, The Australian National University, and UNSW. Nora Niland (26 March 1913 – 29 December 1988) was the County Librarian of Sligo and the founder of the Sligo municipal art collection. Niland was born in 1913, the eighth child of the six sons and three daughters of John Niland and Elizabeth Loughlin of Ballinastack, Tuam, County Galway. In 1945 she became Sligo County Librarian. The reading clerk reads bills, motions, and other papers before the House and keeps track of changes to legislation made on the floor. During the vote for Speaker of the United States House of Representatives at the beginning of each Congress (or when the electronic voting system fails), the Reading Clerk calls the roll of members for voting ''viva voce''.
