Nikolske
Nikolske ( uk, Нiкольське) is an urban-type settlement in Donetsk Oblast, eastern Ukraine. It is located in the industrial region of the Donets Basin. It was the administrative seat of Nikolske Raion until 2020; the settlement now belongs to Mariupol Raion. Population: Its original name was ''Nikolske''. After the October Revolution, it was changed to ''Volodarske'' in 1923 after V. Volodarsky, a Bolshevik. On February 18, 2016, as part of decommunization laws, the settlement was returned to the founding name of ''Nikolske''. The town was captured by Russia and annexed into the Donetsk People's Republic during the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, and the occupation authorities changed its name back to ''Volodarske'' on May 4, 2022. Nikolske Raion
Nikolske Raion ( uk, Нікольський район), until May 2016 Volodarske Raion ( uk, Володарський район), was one of the raions of Donetsk Oblast, located in southwestern Ukraine. The administrative center of the raion was the urban-type settlement of Nikolske. The raion was abolished on 18 July 2020 as part of the administrative reform of Ukraine, which reduced the number of raions of Donetsk Oblast to eight, of which only five were controlled by the government. The area of the former Nikolske Raion was merged into Mariupol Raion. The ''Ukrainian Soviet Encyclopedia'' ( uk, Українська радянська енциклопедія, ''Ukrayinska radyanska entsyklopediya'') was a multi-purpose encyclopedia of Ukraine, issued in the USSR. First attempt Following the publication of the first volume of the in Lviv, then in Poland, in 1930, the ''Ukrainian Soviet Encyclopedia'' (''USE'') was commissioned by Mykola Skrypnyk. During his chairmanship in Kharkiv the editorial board of the ''USE'' was established, enlisting the help of over 100 professionals. Printing began in early 1933, but Moscow censors decried the encyclopedia as being nationalist. Of the 20 planned volumes only three were produced. Decommunization In Ukraine
Decommunization in Ukraine started during and after the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991. With the success of the Revolution of Dignity in 2014, the Ukrainian government approved Ukrainian decommunization laws, laws that outlawed communist symbols. On 15 May 2015, President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko signed a set of laws that started a six-month period for the removal of communist monuments (excluding World War II monuments) and renaming of public places named after communist-related themes. At the time, this meant that 22 cities and 44 villages were set to get new names. Until 21 November 2015, municipal governments had the authority to implement this; if they failed to do so, the Oblasts of Ukraine had until 21 May 2016 to change the names. An oblast ( uk, о́бласть; ) in Ukraine, often called a region or province, is the main type of first-level administrative division of the country. Ukraine's territory is divided into 24 oblasts, as well as one autonomous republic, Crimea, and two cities with special status, Kyiv and Sevastopol. The Seversky Donets () or Siverskyi Donets (), usually simply called the Donets, is a river on the south of the East European Plain. It originates in the Central Russian Upland, north of Belgorod, flows south-east through Ukraine (Kharkiv, Donetsk and Luhansk Oblasts) and then again through Russia (Rostov Oblast) to join the river Don, about from the Sea of Azov.
