Nikolay Alekseyevich Bobrinski
Professor Count Nikolay Alekseyevich Bobrinski (10 March 1890 – 27 December 1964) was a Russian zoologist and biogeographer. Biography Nikolay Alekseyevich Bobrinski was born on 10 March 1890 into the Russian aristocratic family Bobrinski, Bobrinsky or Bobrinskoy (Бобринские). In the 1930s he was held in high esteem within Russia and was working at the Zoological Museum in Moscow. His speciality was mammals and in 1944 he co-authored ''Mammals of the USSR''. Other publications included ''The Animal World and Nature of the USSR'' and ''Animal Geography'' (1951). Bobrinski's jerboa (''Allactodipus bobrinskii''), a species of small rodent, and Bobrinski's serotine Bobrinski's serotine (''Eptesicus bobrinskoi'') is a species of vesper bat. The Counts Bobrinsky or Bobrinskoy (''Бобринские'') are a Russian nobility, Russian noble family descending from Count Aleksey Grigorievich Bobrinsky (1762–1813), who was Catherine the Great's natural son by Count Grigory Orlov. The first Count Bobrinsky Empress Catherine II gave birth to her only official illegitimate son on April 11, 1762, several months before her ascension to the throne. Catherine had to conceal the pregnancy. When the due date came, to distract her husband, Emperor Peter III of Russia, Peter III, her trusted servant Vasily Shkurin was ordered to burn his own house, knowing that the Emperor had a passion to watch the fires. Bobrinski's serotine (''Eptesicus bobrinskoi'') is a species of vesper bat. It can be found in Iran and Kazakhstan. Taxonomy Bobrinski's serotine was described as a new species in 1935 by Alexander Petrovitch Kuzyakin (also spelled Kuzjakin). The holotype had been collected in 1928 by S. P. Naumov in Central Kazakhstan. The eponym for the species name ''bobrinskoi'' was Russian zoologist Nikolay Alekseyevich Bobrinski. As of 2006, it was the only species of bat that had been newly described from Kazakhstan. Like all other small-bodied ''Eptesicus'' species, it was once placed in the subgenus ''Amblyotus'', whose valid status is now doubted. Genetic data shows that it is closely related to the Gobi big brown bat, and that Bobrinski's serotine may not be a separate species. Instead, it is likely a subspecies of the Gobi big brown bat.
