The seat of the municipality is in Peta. The municipality has an area of 231.842 km2. Arta ( el, Περιφερειακή ενότητα Άρτας) is one of the regional units of Greece. It is part of the Epirus region. Its capital is the town of Arta. Geography The regional unit of Arta is located north of the Ambracian Gulf. The main mountain ranges are the Athamanika in the northeast, the Pindus in the east, and Valtou in the southeast. Only one mountain road links Arta with the Pineios valley and Thessaly. There are low-lying agricultural plains in the west. Arta borders on the regional units of Preveza in the west, Ioannina to the north, Trikala in the east, Karditsa to the east and Aetolia-Acarnania to the south. Nikolaos Skoufas
Nikolaos Skoufas ( el, Νικόλαος Σκουφάς; 1779 – July 31, 1818) was a founding member of the Filiki Eteria ("Society of Friends"), a Greek conspiratorial organization against the Ottoman Empire. (''retrieved from University of California Library'') Biography Skoufas was born in 1779 in the village of Kompoti near Arta, Ottoman Greece. His father's surname was "Koumparos". He worked at various times as an apothecary, a commercial secretary and a hatter (from which he took the name Skoufas). Skoufas left as a merchant for Russia for business purposes. While there, he became acquainted with Athanasios Tsakalov and Emmanuil Xanthos. The three men came up with the idea of founding a secret organisation to prepare the ground for Greek independence. So, the Filiki Eteria was founded in 1814 in Odessa. Skoufas dedicated the rest of his life to the cause. Peta, Greece
Peta ( el, Πέτα) is a town and a former municipality in the Arta regional unit, Epirus, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Nikolaos Skoufas, of which it is the seat and a municipal unit. The municipal unit has an area of 105.571 km2. In 2011 its population was 1,563 for the town, 4,105 for the community and 4,781 for the municipal unit. Peta is located north of Amfilochia, northeast of Arta, south-southeast of Ioannina and east of Preveza. The Arachthos River and its reservoir lies to the northwest. Kommeno ( el, Κομμένο) is a village and a former community in the Arta regional unit, Epirus, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Nikolaos Skoufas, of which it is a municipal unit. The municipal unit has an area of 14.354 km2. Population 769 (2011). Kommeno massacre During the Axis Occupation of Greece in World War II, the village was the site of a massacre perpetrated by 12 Company of the 98th Regiment, of the German 1. Gebirgs-Division (First Mountain Division), which, on 16 August 1943, executed 317 inhabitants and torched the village. On 12 August 1943, a two-man Wehrmacht reconnaissance team had come across a small group of andartes in the village and had reported back to divisional headquarters in Ioannina. Kompóti ( el, Κομπότι, ) is a village and a former municipality in the Arta (regional unit), Arta regional unit, Epirus (region), Epirus, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Nikolaos Skoufas (municipality), Nikolaos Skoufas, of which it is a municipal unit. The municipal unit has an area of 38.486 km2. In 2011 its population was 1,544 for the town, 11650 for the community and 2,542 for the municipal unit. The Greek National Road 5/European route E55, E55 connects Kompoti with Messolonghi to the south and Arta, Greece, Arta and Ioannina to the north.
