Nikita, Ukraine
Nikita ( uk, Нікіта; russian: Никита; crh, Nikita) is an urban-type settlement in Yalta Municipality of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea, a territory recognized by a majority of countries as part of Ukraine and incorporated by Russia as the Republic of Crimea. It is known for the Nikitsky Botanical Garden named after the settlement. Population: Originally it was a village of Nikita owned by a landowner Smirnov, bought by the state in 1811 for the creation of the botanical garden. During the times of the Soviet Union the settlement was renamed into ''Botanicheskoye'' ("Botanical" in Russian). Nikitsky Botanical Garden
Nikita Botanical Garden (russian: Никитский ботанический сад, ua, Нікітський ботанічний сад) is one of the oldest botanical gardens in Europe. It is located in Crimea, close to Yalta, by the shores of the Black Sea. It was founded in 1812 and named after the settlement Nikita in Crimea, Russian Empire. Its founder and first director was Russian botanist Christian Steven of Swedish descent. The garden and its collections were greatly expanded by the Livonian Nicolai Anders von Hartwiss, director 1827–1860. The total area is 11 square kilometres. It is a scientific research centre, a producer of saplings and seeds, and a tourist attraction. The garden was the part of the Ukrainian Academy of Agrarian Sciences.
