Nieuwendijk
Nieuwendijk is a village in the Dutch province of North Brabant. It is a part of the municipality of Altena, and lies about 8 km south of Gorinchem. History The village was first mentioned in 1468 as Nyewendijck, and means "new dike". Nieuw (new) has been added to distinguish from . Nieuwendijk was a village of dike workers and reed cutters, and could only be reached by water. Nieuwendijk was home to 219 people in 1840. In 1970, the Haringvliet was closed off and the reed disappeared. Altena, North Brabant
Altena is a municipality in the Netherlands, on a river island in the very north of the province of North Brabant, bordering the provinces of Gelderland and South Holland. Nearby cities are Dordrecht in the west, Gorinchem in the north (both in South Holland), and Waalwijk in the south. Approximately 56,000 people live in an area of about 201 km², making Altena the largest municipality of North Brabant in terms of land area (surpassing Meierijstad). Geography The municipality was formed on 1 January 2019, by the merger of the municipalities of Aalburg, Werkendam, and Woudrichem. Werkendam () is a town and a former municipality in the southern Netherlands. The municipality, part of Land van Heusden en Altena, contained a large part of De Biesbosch area as is located in the province of North Brabant. On January 1sth 2019 it joined Woudrichem and Aalburg in the new municipality of Altena. Marieke Lucas Rijneveld
Marieke Lucas Rijneveld (born 20 April 1991 in Nieuwendijk, the Netherlands) is a Dutch writer. Rijneveld won the 2020 International Booker Prize together with his translator Michele Hutchison for the debut novel ''The Discomfort of Evening''. Rijneveld is the first Dutch author to win the prize, the first non-binary person to do so and only the third Dutch author to be nominated. Life Rijneveld grew up in a Reformed protestant family on a farm in North Brabant in the Netherlands. Rijneveld has said that his debut novel, translated into English as ''The Discomfort of Evening'', is inspired partly by the death of his brother when the author was three. It took him six years to complete the novel. Rijneveld is said to have developed an interest in writing in primary school after reading J. K.
