Nieuw-Amsterdam, Netherlands
Nieuw-Amsterdam ( or ) is a village in the northeast Netherlands, in the Dutch province of Drenthe. It borders the village of Veenoord, the twin village of Nieuw-Amsterdam. Since 1998 Nieuw-Amsterdam and Veenoord are part of the municipality of Emmen. History In 1850, a group of investors from Amsterdam bought a tract of peatland and named it after their own city: Amsterdamscheveld ("field of Amsterdam"). A settlement, that was built near these lands several years later, was called Nieuw-Amsterdam. The settlement developed itself quickly because of the peat trade. Drenthe therefore acquired the nickname ''Drents California''. The only difference was that there was no gold in the ground, but peat. Important for the development of the village was that it is situated along the canal called the Verlengde Hoogeveensevaart. The "Hervormde kerk" was erected in 1873 by the architect H. C. Winters. Village
A village is a clustered human settlement or community, larger than a hamlet but smaller than a town (although the word is often used to describe both hamlets and smaller towns), with a population typically ranging from a few hundred to a few thousand. Van Gogh House is a cultural site in Nieuw-Amsterdam, in the province of Drenthe in the Netherlands. The painter Vincent van Gogh stayed here for two months in 1883; the house is now a museum. Bas Sibum
Bas Sibum (born 26 December 1982) is a Dutch professional football manager and former player who is the head coach of club Roda JC. Playing career A defensive midfielder during his playing days, he made his professional debut as part of Emmen in the 2000–01 season. He also played for FC Twente, Roda JC, NEC, Alemannia Aachen, SK Beveren and Heracles Almelo. Managerial career Sibum started coaching Emmen's youth in February 2017, where he was appointed coach of the under-19 team. He was since promoted to assistant coach of the first team. On 9 May 2023, Eerste Divisie club Roda JC announced Sibum as their new head coach, replacing Edwin de Graaf. The move marked a return to the club, where he played between 2007 and 2008. Emmen Railway Station
Emmen is a terminus railway station located in Emmen, Netherlands. The station was opened on 1 November 1905 and is located on the Zwolle–Emmen railway. Train services are operated by Arriva. The line continues for a short distance to a headshunt where trains can wait before returning, formerly the line continued onwards in a northerly direction with stations at Weerdinge, Exloo and Buinen, to a junction with the now closed line between Assen and Stadskanaal at Gasselternijveen. This closed in the late 1950s with the exception of a short freight only section from Gasselternijveen to Buinen which closed at the same time as Assen - Stadskanaal (early 1960s). Although the tracks have been removed, the remains of the track beds of both lines are still visible in the landscape. There are plans to reinstate the section between Emmen and Stadskanaal (and from there, connecting to the train to Veendam and Groningen). Zwolle Railway Station
Zwolle is the main railway station of Zwolle in Overijssel, Netherlands. The station opened on 6 June 1864 and is on the Utrecht–Kampen railway, also known as the ''Centraalspoorweg'', the Zwolle–Almelo railway, the Arnhem–Leeuwarden railway, the Zwolle–Stadskanaal railway and the Lelystad–Zwolle railway, also known as the ''Hanzelijn''. Drawbridge In Nieuw-Amsterdam
''Drawbridge in Nieuw-Amsterdam'' is a watercolor created in November 1883 by Vincent van Gogh in Drente, The Netherlands. Watercolor painting Van Gogh wrote to his brother, Theo, of the view outside his room in Nieuw-Amsterdam, Drenthe: "I now have a reasonably large room where a stove has been placed, where there happens to be a small balcony. From which I can even see the heath with the huts. I also look out on a very curious drawbridge." Within the letter he drew a sketch of the bridge, which became the watercolor, ''Drawbridge in Nieuw-Amsterdam''. The work was one of 148 watercolors made by Van Gogh, who said of working in that medium in 1881: What a splendid thing watercolour is to express atmosphere and distance, so that the figure is surrounded by air and can breathe in it, as it were. Peatland
A mire, peatland, or quagmire is a wetland area dominated by living peat-forming plants. Mires arise because of incomplete decomposition of organic matter, usually litter from vegetation, due to water-logging and subsequent anoxia. All types of mires share the common characteristic of being saturated with water, at least seasonally with actively forming peat, while having their own ecosystem. Like coral reefs, mires are unusual landforms that derive mostly from biological rather than physical processes, and can take on characteristic shapes and surface patterning. A quagmire is a floating (quaking) mire, bog, or any peatland being in a stage of hydrosere or hydrarch (hydroseral) succession, resulting in pond-filling yields underfoot. Veenoord
Veenoord is a village in the Netherlands and it is part of the Emmen municipality in Drenthe. It forms a single urban area with Nieuw-Amsterdam. Vincent van Gogh stayed in the Scholte Inn during his Drenthe period. History Veenoord translates to "bog settlement". Even though this suggests a peat colony, it was never a property of a company or city. The settlement started in 1859 when the Verlengde Hoogeveensche vaart was dug. The name Veenoord first appeared in 1899. In 1907, the potato starch factory Excelsior opened in the village, and remained until 1980. In 1880, the Scholte Inn was built in Veenoord. In 1883, Vincent van Gogh spent three months in the inn during his Drenthe period. The building is publicly accessible and serves as a visitor centre.
