Nielsen Gallery
Nielsen Gallery is a commercial art gallery originally located on Newbury Street in the Back Bay area of Boston, United States. Founded in 1963 by Nina Nielsen and John Baker, the gallery won “Best Show in a Commercial Gallery in the United States,” prizes from the International Association of Art Critics, in 2005 and 2009. Originally a frame shop that also sold Japanese prints, they began to exhibit paintings in 1973. During the 46 years that the gallery was open in its original building, and also in its current online and by-appointment incarnation, it has showcased and supported contemporary American artists, especially those creating experimental and avant-garde work. Art Gallery
An art gallery is a room or a building in which visual art is displayed. In Western cultures from the mid-15th century, a gallery was any long, narrow covered passage along a wall, first used in the sense of a place for art in the 1590s. The long gallery in Elizabethan and Jacobean houses served many purposes including the display of art. Historically, art is displayed as evidence of status and wealth, and for religious art as objects of ritual or the depiction of narratives. The first galleries were in the palaces of the aristocracy, or in churches. As art collections grew, buildings became dedicated to art, becoming the first art museums. Among the modern reasons art may be displayed are aesthetic enjoyment, education, historic preservation, or for marketing purposes. The term is used to refer to establishments with distinct social and economic functions, both public and private. Marsden Hartley
Marsden Hartley (January 4, 1877 – September 2, 1943) was an American Modernist painter, poet, and essayist. Hartley developed his painting abilities by observing Cubist artists in Paris and Berlin. Early life and education Hartley was born in Lewiston, Maine, where his English parents had settled. He was the youngest of nine children.. His mother died when he was eight, and his father remarried four years later to Martha Marsden. His birth name was Edmund Hartley; he later assumed Marsden as his first name when he was in his early twenties. A few years after his mother's death when Hartley was 14, his sisters moved to Ohio, leaving him behind in Maine with his father where he worked in a shoe factory for a year. Contemporary Art Galleries In The United States
Contemporary history, in English-language historiography, is a subset of modern history that describes the historical period from approximately 1945 to the present. Contemporary history is either a subset of the late modern period, or it is one of the three major subsets of modern history, alongside the early modern period and the late modern period. Gregory Amenoff
Gregory Amenoff (born 1948) is an American painter. He is located in the tradition of the early American Modernist painters Georgia O'Keeffe, Charles Burchfield, Milton Avery, Arthur Dove and Marsden Hartley. In the early 80s his work was often associated with a style of painting called organic abstraction and exhibited alongside artists Bill Jensen, Katherine Porter and Terry Winters. Gregory Amenoff was born in Saint Charles, Illinois, in 1948 to Beatice and C.V. Amenoff. He received a B.A. in history from Beloit College in 1970. He moved to Boston in 1971 where he began his career, showing at the Nielsen Gallery on Newbury Street. He relocated to New York in 1979. In 1980 he began showing with Robert Miller Gallery on Fifth Avenue. Amenoff was included in the 1981, 1985 biennials at the Whitney Museum of American Art. Sedrick Huckaby
Sedrick Ervin Huckaby (1975) is an American artist known for his use of thick, impasto paint to create murals that evoke traditional quilts and his production of large portraits that represent his personal history through images of family members and neighbors. Biography Huckaby is a native of Fort Worth, Texas. As a child, Huckaby spent time drawing characters from TV shows such as ''Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles'' and ''Battlestar Galactica''. While in high school, he attended classes at the Modern Art Museum, where he met fellow artist Ron Tomlinson, who encouraged Huckaby to pursue art as a career. Bill Jensen
Bill Jensen (born 1945) is an American abstract painter. Education Jensen was born in 1945 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He studied at University of Minnesota, where he earned his BFA in 1968 and his MFA in 1970. He has lived and worked in New York City since the early 1970s. Jensen was one of the artist pioneers who established a studio in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Career Early years In 1971, Jensen was included in a group show at the Brooklyn Museum in New York. Jake Berthot
Jake Berthot (1939–2014) was an American artist whose abstract paintings contained elements of both the Minimalism, minimalist and Abstract expressionism, expressionist styles. During the first 36 years of his career his paintings were entirely Abstract art, non-figurative. His style changed in 1995 when he moved his studio from New York City to a rural community in upstate New York. While continuing to be abstract his paintings thereafter contained figurative elements and were seen to have greater emotional content. Throughout his career his work frequently appeared in solo and group exhibitions in both commercial and public galleries. It has been collected by the Museum of Modern Art, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, Guggenheim Museum, National Gallery of Art, and other major American art museums.
