Niels Nielsen (mathematician)
Niels Nielsen (2 December 1865, in Ørslev – 16 September 1931, in Copenhagen) was a Danish mathematician who specialised in mathematical analysis. Life and work Nielsen was the son of humble peasants and grew up in the western part of the island of Funen. In 1891 he graduated in mathematics from the University of Copenhagen and in 1895 obtained his doctorate. In 1909 he succeeded Julius Petersen as Professor of Mathematics at the University of Copenhagen. His most original works were on special functions, with an important contribution to the theory of the gamma function. In 1917 he suffered from an illness from which he never fully recovered. From this date onward he became interested in the number theory, Bernoulli numbers, Stirling numbers, and the history of mathematics, writing two books on Danish mathematicians of the time period 1528-1908, and two other books on French mathematicians. Niels Rasmus Wilson Nielsen (2 March 1869 – 1 July 1930) was a Danish-born politician and union official in New South Wales, Australia. Life and career He was born in Copenhagen to Niels Peter Nielsen and Susan Wilson. He arrived in Australia around 1874, becoming a carpenter and farmer near Young and a local officer of the Australian Workers' Union. Around 1888 he married Marie Booth in Yass; they had three daughters and three sons. He was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly as the Labor member for Boorowa at the 1899 by-election. Boorowa was abolished in the 1904 re-distribution of electorates following the 1903 New South Wales referendum, which required the number of members of the Legislative Assembly to be reduced from 125 to 90, and was largely absorbed by Yass, with the balance going to the new district of Burrangong. Niels Åge Nielsen
Niels Aage Anton Nielsen (born in Vejle 25 June 1913, died 16 January 1986) was a Danish professor of Nordic languages at Aarhus University. He was also a leader in the Danish resistance movement. Life and career Nielsen was the son of master carpenter Niels Nielsen (1883-1962) and his wife Ella Kirstine Rasmussen (maiden name) (1892-1979). He took his high school diploma at Marselisborg Gymnasium in 1933, and in 1942 he obtained a master's degree in arts from Aarhus University. Later, he held various teaching positions at the same university, until he became a professor of Nordic languages at Odense University in 1966. However, he returned to his former university in 1972. He mostly devoted his attention to studying Danish dialects, especially the different dialects in Jutland and the history of the Danish language. The Old Man of the Mountain, also called the Great Stone Face and the Profile, was a series of five granite cliff ledges on Cannon Mountain in Franconia, New Hampshire, United States, that appeared to be the jagged profile of a human face when viewed from the north. The rock formation, above Profile Lake, was tall and wide. The Old Man of the Mountain is called "Stone Face" by the Abenaki and is a symbol within their culture. It is also a symbol to the Mohawk people. The first written mention of the Old Man was in 1805. It became a landmark and a cultural icon for the state of New Hampshire. Nils Herbert Kromann Nielsen (born 3 November 1971) is a Danish football manager. Since 14 November 2018, he is the head coach of the Switzerland women's national football team. Nielsen is best known for his tenure with the Denmark women's national football team from 2013 to 2017. He led the Danes to a runners-up finish at the UEFA Women's Euro 2017. Despite departing the team shortly after, Nielsen received acclaim for his work and finished runner-up in the 2017 The Best FIFA Women's Coach award.
