Nidd Bridge railway station served the village of Nidd, North Yorkshire, England from 1848 to 1964 on the Leeds-Northallerton Railway. History The station was opened as Ripley on 1 June 1848 by the Leeds Northern Railway The Leeds Northern Railway (LNR), originally the Leeds and Thirsk Railway, was an English railway company that built and opened a line from Leeds to Stockton via Harrogate and Thirsk. In 1845 the Leeds and Thirsk Railway received permission for .... It was situated on the south side of the B6165. The goods yard was behind the down platform, which consisted of four sidings. One passed through the goods yard, one served a 5-ton crane and two docks, one was alongside the line and the goods line and the other was behind the down platform. Its name was changed to Nidd Bridge on 1 June 1862, although it cost £411 for this change to happen. Nidd is a small village and civil parish in the Harrogate district of North Yorkshire, England. The population of the village taken at the 2011 census was 168. It is situated 3 miles north of Harrogate, east of Ripley on the B6165 Pateley Bridge to Knaresborough road and near the River Nidd. The village used to have a railway station ( Nidd Bridge) on the Leeds to Northallerton Railway, but this was closed down on 18 June 1962. The village takes its name from the River Nidd which passes through the parish. The parish church of St Paul & St Margaret has a stone monument to the Rawson family who owned Nidd Hall in the 19th and the early part of the 20th centuries. Nidd Hall is a former country house which has been converted into a hotel. Leeds Northern Railway
The Leeds Northern Railway (LNR), originally the Leeds and Thirsk Railway, was an English railway company that built and opened a line from Leeds to Stockton via Harrogate and Thirsk. In 1845 the Leeds and Thirsk Railway received permission for a line from Leeds to Thirsk, part of which opened in 1848, but problems building the Bramhope Tunnel delayed trains operating into Leeds until 1849. The Leeds and Thirsk Railway Company changed its name to the Leeds Northern Railway on 3 July 1851 before its line to Stockton opened. The company formed an alliance with the West Hartlepool Harbour & Railway and was involved in a price war with the York, Newcastle & Berwick Railway (YN&BR). North Eastern Railway (United Kingdom)
The North Eastern Railway (NER) was an English railway company. It was incorporated in 1854 by the combination of several existing railway companies. Later, it was amalgamated with other railways to form the London and North Eastern Railway at the Grouping in 1923. Its main line survives to the present day as part of the East Coast Main Line between London and Edinburgh. Unlike many other pre-Grouping companies the NER had a relatively compact territory, in which it had a near monopoly. North Eastern Region Of British Railways
The North Eastern Region was a region of British Railways from 1948, whose operating area could be identified by the orange signs and colour schemes that adorned its stations and other railway buildings. It was merged with the Eastern Region in 1967. It was the near direct post-nationalisation descendant of the North Eastern Railway, that had merged with some other companies to form the LNER in 1923.
