Washington's 43rd legislative district is one of forty-nine districts in Washington state for representation in the state legislature. It covers parts of Seattle, specifically Downtown Seattle, First Hill, Capitol Hill, South Lake Union, Washington Park, Madison Park, Eastlake, Montlake, Portage Bay, Wallingford, Fremont, the University District (including the UW campus), Green Lake and parts of Phinney Ridge and Ravenna. The district's legislators are state senator Jamie Pedersen and state representatives Nicole Macri (position 1) and Frank Chopp (position 2), all Democrats. The House of Representatives position 1 seat has the distinction of being held by an openly gay person longer than any other seat in the world, starting with Cal Anderson's appointment in 1987 and continuing through with Ed Murray, Jamie Pedersen, Brady Piñero Walkinshaw, and currently Nicole Macri. KCPQ (channel 13) is a television station licensed to Tacoma, Washington, United States, broadcasting the Fox network to the Seattle area. It is owned and operated by the network's Fox Television Stations division alongside MyNetworkTV outlet KZJO (channel 22). The two stations share studios on Westlake Avenue in Seattle's Westlake neighborhood; KCPQ's main transmitter is located on Gold Mountain in Bremerton. The station signed on in August 1953 as KMO-TV, the adjunct to Tacoma radio station KMO. It was briefly a network affiliate until another Seattle station signed on; the next year, KMO radio and television were sold to separate owners. The buyer for channel 13 was Seattle broadcaster J. Elroy McCaw, who changed the call letters to KTVW and ran it as an independent station. Downtown Emergency Service Center
The Downtown Emergency Service Center (DESC) is a non-profit organization in Seattle, Washington, providing services for that city's homeless population. The organization was founded in 1979 to aid men and women living in a state of chronic homelessness who, due to their severe and persistent mental and addictive illnesses, were not being served by the existing shelters of the time. At its opening, the non-profit sheltered nearly 200 adults from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. in the ballroom of the Morrison Hotel.
