Nicole Lawder
Nicole Ann Lawder (born 31 July 1962) is an Australian politician. She has been a Liberal member of the Australian Capital Territory Legislative Assembly since June 2013 and served as Deputy Leader of the Opposition from October 2016 to October 2020. Lawder was born in Malaysia to a military family. She received a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the Australian National University, having moved to Canberra in 1988. She also received a Masters in Business from Swinburne University of Technology. A member of the National People with Disability and Carer Council (2008–13) and the ACMA Consumer Consultative Forum (2009–13), she was CEO of Homelessness Australia and the Deafness Forum of Australia. In 2012 she was the Liberal Party's Southern Electorate Branch Deputy President, and ran as a candidate at the 2012 ACT election for the seat of Brindabella. Australian Capital Territory Legislative Assembly
The Legislative Assembly for the Australian Capital Territory (known in short as the ACT Legislative Assembly) is the unicameral legislature of the Australian Capital Territory (ACT). It sits in the Legislative Assembly Building on Civic Square, close to the centre of the city of Canberra. Creation The Assembly was created by four acts of the Commonwealth Parliament in 1988, including the Australian Capital Territory (Self-Government) Act 1988. The first election was held on 4 March 1989 and the assembly first sat on 11 May that year. Until this point, the ACT had been directly administered by the Commonwealth Government. It replaced the House of Assembly (also known for a period as the Legislative Assembly), which existed from 1976 to 1986, but had no executive power, with a principal function of advising the Commonwealth on matters relating to the Territory. 2012 Australian Capital Territory General Election
Elections to the Australian Capital Territory Legislative Assembly occurred on Saturday, 20 October 2012. The 11-year incumbent Labor Party, led by Chief Minister Katy Gallagher, won a fourth term over the main opposition Liberal Party, led by opposition leader Zed Seselja. Candidates are elected to fill all 17 Legislative Assembly seats in the unicameral parliament which consists of three multi-member electorates, Brindabella (five seats), Ginninderra (five seats) and Molonglo (seven seats), using a proportional representation single transferable vote method known as the Hare-Clark system.
