Nicolas-Guy Turbide
Nicolas-Guy Turbide (born January 12, 1997) is a Canadian Paralympic swimmer who has albinism. He is a two-time Paralympic medallist, a Commonwealth Games champion, a triple Parapan American Games champion and a World silver medallist in the 100m backstroke. Career Turbide was named Male Para Swimmer of the Year by Swimming Canada in 2016 and 2018 and was named co-winner in 2019. He was awarded the Medal of the National Assembly by the National Assembly of Quebec in 2016. Paralympic Swimming
Para swimming is an adaptation of the sport of swimming for athletes with disabilities. Para swimmers compete at the Summer Paralympic Games and at other sports competitions throughout the world. The sport is governed by the International Paralympic Committee. Both men and women compete in para swimming, racing against competitors of their own gender. Swimming has been a part of the Paralympic program since the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome, Italy. The Commonwealth Games, often referred to as the Friendly Games or simply the Comm Games, are a quadrennial international multi-sport event among athletes from the Commonwealth of Nations. Canada At The 2022 Commonwealth Games
Canada competed at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England. This was Canada's 22nd appearance at the Commonwealth Games, having competed at every Games since their inception in 1930. Benoît Huot was the original Chef de Mission. However, after Huot stepped down due to family commitments, 2018 Chef de Mission, Claire Carver-Dias and former sprinter and Commonwealth Games athlete Sam Effah were named as co-Chefs de Mission in April 2022. Backstroke
Backstroke or back crawl is one of the four Swimming (sport), swimming styles used in competitive events regulated by FINA, and the only one of these styles swum on the back. This swimming style has the advantage of easy breathing, but the disadvantage of swimmers not being able to see where they are going. It also has a different start from the other three competition swimming styles. The swimming style is similar to an ''upside down'' front crawl or freestyle. Both backstroke and front crawl are long-axis strokes. In individual medley backstroke is the second style swum; in the medley relay it is the first style swum. Swimming is one of the sports at the quadrennial Commonwealth Games competition. Swimming At The Summer Paralympics
Swimming has been contested at every Summer Paralympics. At the first games, the 1960 Paralympics, 62 swimming events were held in distances of 25 and 50 metres, plus a 3×50 metre relay for men. Since then, swimming at the Paralympics has grown to 140 events covering distances from 50 to 400 metres, plus 4×50 and 4×100 metre relays. Along with track and field athletics, it is one of the largest sports at the Paralympics in terms of the number of events, competitors, and spectators. Albinism
Albinism is the congenital absence of melanin in an animal or plant resulting in white hair, feathers, scales and skin and pink or blue eyes. Individuals with the condition are referred to as albino. Varied use and interpretation of the terms mean that written reports of albinistic animals can be difficult to verify.
