Nicola Brewer
Dame Nicola Mary Brewer (born 14 November 1957) is a former British diplomat and university administrator. From 2014 to 2020, she was Vice-Provost (International) at University College London, she was British High Commissioner to South Africa from 2009 to 2013, and the first Chief Executive of Britain's Equality and Human Rights Commission from 2007 to 2009. Life Brewer was educated at the Belfast Royal Academy, and read English at the University of Leeds, graduating with a BA in 1980, then taking a Doctorate in linguistics in 1988 there. Brewer joined the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) in 1983, completing overseas postings in South Africa, India, France and Mexico. She served as the FCO's Director for Global Issues from 2001 to 2002, and then as Director-General for Regional Programmes at the Department for International Development (DfID), the DfID board member supervising the UK's overseas bilateral aid programmes. Equal Opportunities Commission (United Kingdom)
The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) was an independent non-departmental public body (NDPB) in the United Kingdom, which tackled sex discrimination and promoted gender equality. Its last chair was Jenny Watson. It was set up under the Sex Discrimination Act 1975 and had statutory powers to help enforce this Act, the Equal Pay Act and other gender equality legislation that existed in Britain. Due to the ability of the Scottish Parliament and Welsh Assembly to vary the law in this area, separate EOC sub-agencies existed for Scotland and Wales. The EOC did not cover Northern Ireland, where instead these matters were dealt with by the Equality Commission for Northern Ireland. Similar agencies existed for other categories of equality law in England, Scotland and Wales. Nemat Talaat Shafik, Baroness Shafik, (Arabic: نعمت شفيق; born 13 August 1962), known as Minouche Shafik, is an Egyptian-born British-American economist who has been serving as the President and Vice Chancellor of the London School of Economics since September 2017. Beginning on 1 July 2023, she will serve as the president of Columbia University, the first woman since its founding in the year 1754. Shafik previously served as the Deputy Governor of the Bank of England from August 2014 to February 2017.
