Nick Skelton
Nicholas David Skelton (born 30 December 1957, Bedworth, Warwickshire) is a British former equestrian who competed in show jumping. He retired at the age of 59 years old, on 5 April 2017. He began riding at age 18 months and in 1975 took two team silvers and an individual gold at the Junior European Championships. He has competed numerous times at the European Show Jumping Championships, winning three golds, three silvers and three bronzes both individually and with the British team over 26 years. In 1980, he competed in the Alternative Olympics, where he helped the British team to a silver medal. He currently holds the British show jumping high jump record, which he set in 1978. His most notable successes occurred in back-to-back Olympic Games in the swansong of his career. In 2012, at the age of 54, Skelton won an Olympic gold medal as part of the Great Britain team. The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire is a British order of chivalry, rewarding contributions to the arts and sciences, work with charitable and welfare organisations, and public service outside the civil service. Equestrian At The 2016 Summer Olympics
The equestrian events at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro were held between 6 and 19 August at National Equestrian Center in Deodoro. Medals were awarded in three disciplines for both individual and team competitions. 2017 New Year Honours
The 2017 New Year Honours are appointments by some of the 16 Commonwealth realms to various orders and honours to recognise and reward good works by citizens of those countries. 2016 BBC Sports Personality Of The Year Award
The 2016 BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award took place on 18 December 2016 at the Genting Arena in Birmingham. It was the 63rd presentation of the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award. Bedworth Railway Station
Bedworth railway station serves the town of Bedworth in Warwickshire, England. It is on the Coventry to Nuneaton Line north of Coventry railway station. The station, and all trains serving it, are operated by West Midlands Trains. History Original station The original Bedworth station operated between 1850 and 1965. The London and North Western Railway (LNWR) opened the station, along with the Coventry to Nuneaton Line on 12 September 1850. On 18 January 1965 British Railways (BR) withdrew passenger services from the line and closed Bedworth station, along with all of the other intermediate stations on the line. Reopening BR resumed passenger services on the line in 1987 and reopened Bedworth station in 1988. The official opening was on 10 May 1988 and normal passenger services operated from 16 May 1988. London Midland was a train operating company in England which operated the West Midlands franchise between 11 November 2007 and 10 December 2017. It was owned by the British transport group Govia. London Midland was created as a result of Govia being awarded the West Midlands franchise on 22 June 2007. This franchise had emerged out of a reorganisation conducted by the Department for Transport, which had combined elements of the Silverlink and Central Trains operations together. 2012 Summer Olympics And Paralympics Gold Post Boxes
To commemorate British gold medal winners at the 2012 Summer Olympics and 2012 Summer Paralympics, various post boxes in the home towns of the medal winners around the United Kingdom, plus one each on Sark and the Isle of Man, were repainted gold. It marked the first occasion in modern times that the colour of post boxes in the United Kingdom had been changed from their traditional red. Originally intended to be a temporary measure, due to the positive public response it was later decided the colour change would become a permanent tribute, with boxes additionally receiving their own special plaques. Organisers and timeline The project was organised by Royal Mail Group Communications in-house team, Eulogy and Blonde. Outside the United Kingdom, the Isle of Man Post and Guernsey Post also decided to emulate the Royal Mail scheme when athletes from their territories won gold (one each). Alcester
Alcester () is a market town and civil parish of Roman origin at the junction of the River Alne and River Arrow in the Stratford-on-Avon District in Warwickshire, England, approximately west of Stratford-upon-Avon, and 7 miles south of Redditch, close to the Worcestershire border. In 2020, the population of the parish was estimated at 6,202, with 7,146 in the built-up area. British Open Show Jumping Championships
The British Open Show Jumping Championships were launched in 2003 and have been held indoors during April of every year since. For the first four years they were held at Sheffield Arena before moving to the NEC Arena, Birmingham in 2007. The Championships have a unique competition format with the champion being determined by ongoing placings in three qualifying rounds and the final. The British Open title has become much coveted. One of the reasons for this is its policy of only inviting the top British and international show jumpers to compete. In its international classes, only the best (as defined by the British Showjumping Association) can participate. The British Open also hosts national show jumping classes and is the Final for the BSJA Winter Grand Prix and the BEF Under 23 Classic and Championship. Liz Edgar (née Broome; 28 April 1943 – 25 April 2020) was a British international showjumper and board director of British Showjumping. Family She was the younger sister of David Broome and was originally from Monmouthshire. Her father was a keen showjumper. Competitive career She first competed in the Horse of the Year Show at the age of twelve, at the age of seventeen she won the Young Rider Championships and won them again the following year.
