Nick Downing
Nick Downing (born January 25, 1980 in Redmond, Washington) is a retired American professional soccer player who is currently the strength and conditioning coach for New England Revolution in Major League Soccer. Biography Early career The son of Jim and Linda Downing, Nick played soccer locally for Eastlake High School. As a teenager, Downing had stints training with German clubs Bayern Munich and VfB Stuttgart. Downing made 29 appearances and scored one goal with US U-17 national soccer team, including captaining the team at the 1997 FIFA U-17 World Championship in Egypt. Afterwards, he was named the 1998 Gatorade Player of the Year. College As a freshman, Downing played in 23 matches and was named to Soccer America's All-Freshman team. 2002 Major League Soccer Season
The 2002 Major League Soccer season was the seventh season of competition for Major League Soccer. On January 8, 2002, MLS folded two of its teams. The Miami Fusion F.C. ceased operations after only four years in existence due to low attendance and an unfavorable stadium deal. The Tampa Bay Mutiny also ceased operations due to the lack of local ownership. MLS eliminated the Central Division and returned to its original two-conference alignment. According to FC Dallas president Dan Hunt, the entire league nearly folded during the 2001 offseason. The owners agreed to shut down the league on a conference call in November 2001, but within two days Lamar Hunt convinced the other owners to give the league another year. A strength and conditioning coach (also known as an S&C coach) is a physical performance professional who uses exercise prescription to improve the performance of competitive athletes or athletic teams. This is achieved through the combination of strength training, aerobic conditioning, and other methods. Unlike an athletic trainer, a strength and conditioning coach is focused primarily on sport performance. The coach help athletes with injury prevention, through strengthening and coaching of movement mechanics within a sport. Generation Adidas is a joint venture between Major League Soccer and U.S. Soccer aimed at raising the level of young professional soccer talent in the United States. The MLS SuperDraft is an annual college draft for teams of Major League Soccer in the United States and Canada. It takes place in January and is used by teams to select players who have graduated from college or otherwise been signed by the league. The SuperDraft was first instituted in 2000, as a combination of the MLS College Draft, in which players having graduated from college were selected, and the MLS Supplemental Draft, in which all other players were chosen.
