Nicholas R. Amato
Nicholas Raymond Amato (born September 1, 1940) is an American politician who served as Essex County Executive from 1987 to 1991. He was the executive director of the New Jersey Casino Reinvestment Development Authority and later served as the president of the Casino Association of New Jersey. By 2008 he was the general counsel of Resorts International. Biography He was born on September 1, 1940. He was elected Essex County Surrogate as a Democrat in 1971, defeating Republican incumbent Thomas R. Farley, and was re-elected in 1976 and 1981. In 1986, Amato was dumped from the Essex County Democratic organization line by the incumbent County Executive, Peter Shapiro. In 1986 Amato switched parties and became the Republican candidate for Surrogate. After the primary, Amato switched to the Essex County Executive race and ran against Shapiro. The County Executive of Essex County, New Jersey, United States is the chief officer of the county's executive branch and oversees the administration of county government. Approved in a 1977 referendum, the office was inaugurated in 1978 at the same time the Board of Chosen Freeholders, which plays a legislative role, was reconfigured to include a mix of at-large and district seats. The executive offices are located in the county seat, Newark. Peter Shapiro (born April 18, 1952) is a retired financial services executive, former member of the Board of Directors of New Israel Fund and former politician from New Jersey. He was the youngest person ever elected to the New Jersey General Assembly and went on to serve as Essex County Executive and as the Democratic nominee for Governor of New Jersey in 1985 against incumbent Thomas Kean. Casino Reinvestment Development Authority
The Casino Reinvestment Development Authority or CRDA is a New Jersey state governmental agency that was founded in 1984 and is responsible for directing the spending of casino reinvestment funds in public and private projects to benefit Atlantic City and other areas of the state. From 1985 through April 2008, CRDA spent US$1.5 billion on projects in Atlantic City and US$300 million throughout New Jersey. Reinvestment funds are received from New Jersey casinos, which are required by law to contribute 1.25% of gross revenue funds toward projects that are approved by the CRDA.
