Summersville, West Virginia
Summersville is a city in Nicholas County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 3,459 at the 2020 census. It is the county seat of Nicholas County. History Summersville was laid out in 1824. The city was named for Lewis Summers, a local judge who had introduced the bill to create Nicholas County. Summersville was home to both Union and Confederate encampments during the Civil War. The town was mostly burned down by the Confederate spy, Nancy Hart Douglas, during the war. The town was rebuilt by 1884. In 1914, Nicholas County High School was established, then located downtown in the "Old Main". More buildings were built on the campus to house the growing student body until a new building north of town was finished in 1978. Construction on Summersville Dam began in 1960 and was finished and dedicated by President Lyndon Baines Johnson in 1966. Nicholas County, West Virginia
Nicholas County is a county located in the central region of U.S. state of West Virginia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 24,604. Its county seat is Summersville. The county was created in 1818 by the Virginia General Assembly and named for Virginia Governor Wilson Cary Nicholas. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of , of which is land and (1.2%) is water. In 1863, West Virginia's counties were divided into civil townships, with the intention of encouraging local government. This proved impractical in the heavily rural state, and in 1872 the townships were converted into magisterial districts. Nicholas County was divided into six districts: Grant, Jefferson, Kentucky, Mumble-the-peg, Summersville, and Wilderness. In 1873, Mumble-the-peg became Hamilton District. Nicholas County High School
Nicholas County High School is a high school located in Summersville, West Virginia. The mascot for NCHS is the grizzly bear, and its school colors are Old Gold and Old Navy. Due to steady decline in student enrollment, the school currently ranks as a AA school down from a AAA. As a result of flood damage to Richwood High School in June 2016, plans were made to consolidate RHS with NCHS on a new campus. The planned consolidation, however, was rejected by the West Virginia Board of Education on June 13, 2017. On June 2, 2020, the Nicholas County Board of Education broke ground on a new campus for NCHS and Summersville Middle School (which was destroyed in the flood of 2016 and had to be placed in a modular setting) at Glade Creek. The current NCHS campus will be remodeled to house Summersville Elementary School. Richwood High School (West Virginia)
Richwood High School is a public high school located in Richwood, West Virginia, United States. The school serves the eastern third of Nicholas County. During the 2016â2017 school year, Richwood High School had an enrollment of 389 students. Relocation and proposed consolidation Due to flooding on June 23, 2016, both Richwood High School and Richwood Middle School have been temporarily relocated. Richwood High is presently housed in trailers at the former Beaver Elementary School site. On March 7, 2017, the Nicholas County Board of Education approved a plan to permanently close the schools so they can be consolidated with Nicholas County High School and Summersville Middle School on a new campus. Consolidation opponents filed an unsuccessful lawsuit against the Nicholas County Board of Education alleging open meeting laws were violated prior to the vote.
