Nicholas Acquavella
Nicholas Acquavella (1898–1987) was an American art dealer and gallerist, and the founder of Acquavella Galleries. Early life Acquavella was born on 1 July 1898, in Padula, Provincia di Salerno, Kingdom of Italy, and immigrated to the US in 1919, and started dealing privately in Italian art. Career He founded Acquavella Galleries in 1921, at 598 Madison Avenue, where he specialised in Italian art. In 1967, he moved his gallery to 18 East 79th Street, where it remains, and in 1968, his son William Acquavella took over. Personal life He was married to Michelina Editta "Edythe" Acquavella (1911–2008), the daughter of Vincenzo Cardillo and Anna Della Valla. They had one son, William Acquavella, and three grandchildren. Acquavella Galleries is an art gallery located at 18 East 79th Street between Madison and Fifth Avenues in the Upper East Side neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City. History Acquavella Galleries was founded at 598 Madison Avenue in 1921 by Nicholas Acquavella, a native of Naples who had come to the United States in 1919 and begun a private trade in Italian paintings. The gallery has since been operated by the Acquavella family. It originally specialized in works of the Italian Renaissance. Under Acquavella's leadership, the Acquavella Galleries introduced many leading American museums and collectors to Italian Renaissance and Baroque painting, and later to 19th- and 20th-century European masters. William Acquavella
William Raymond Acquavella (born 1937/38) is an American art dealer and gallerist, and the head of Acquavella Galleries. Early life William Raymond Acquavella is the son of Nicholas Acquavella, who founded Acquavella Galleries in 1921, and Edythe Acquavella. He was educated at Westminster School in Simsbury, Connecticut. Career In 1992, he became Lucian Freud's dealer, agreeing to settle Freud's £2.7 million in gambling debts. Acquavella negotiated the sale of a Picasso painting from Steve Wynn to Steve Cohen for $139 million, but it fell through when Wynn put his elbow through the painting. Madison Avenue is a north-south avenue in the borough of Manhattan in New York City, United States, that carries northbound one-way traffic. It runs from Madison Square (at 23rd Street) to meet the southbound Harlem River Drive at 142nd Street. Lenox Hill Hospital (LHH) is a nationally ranked 450-bed non-profit, tertiary, research and academic medical center located on the Upper East Side of Manhattan in New York City, servicing the tri-state area. LHH is one of the region's many university-level academic medical centers. The hospital is owned by Northwell Health, the largest private employer in the state of New York.
