Nicasio Pajarito Gonzalez
Nicasio Pajarito Gonzalez (born October 13, 1935) is a Mexican potter from Tonalá, Jalisco known for his canelo ware. Pajarito Gonzalez has worked with clay most of his life, with a career of over fifty years. He works in the regional styles of bruñido and canelo, but is particularly renowned for the latter. He continues to run his own workshop with his children Zenón and Isabel, who learned the craft from him, producing platters, large covered jars called tibores, jugs, dispensers in the form of bulls and horses. The last are unique to the workshop. The pieces are mostly made of a mix of white clay from a town called Rosario and black clay from Tateposco, mixed in equal proportions, as well as red clay from various sources. The children do most of the prep work, cleaning, mixing and wetting the clay for molding and modeling, which includes working out the air bubbles by stomping it with the feet. Tonalá, Jalisco
Tonalá () is a city and municipality within the Guadalajara Metropolitan Area in the state of Jalisco in Mexico. With a population of 374,258, it is the fourth largest city in the state, the other three being the other major population centres in the metro area: Guadalajara, Zapopan, and Tlaquepaque. It is best known as a major handcrafts center for Jalisco, especially pottery, as well as its very large Thursday and Sunday street market, dedicated to handcrafts. Ceramics of Jalisco, Mexico has a history that extends far back in the pre Hispanic period, but modern production is the result of techniques introduced by the Spanish during the colonial period and the introduction of high-fire production in the 1950s and 1960s by Jorge Wilmot and Ken Edwards. The Museo Regional de la Cerámica (Regional Ceramic Museum) in Tlaquepaque, Jalisco, Mexico is located on Independencia Street in the center of the city. The museum is one of two main ceramics museums in the city, with the other being the Pantaleon Panduro Museum . It was established in 1954 to preserve and promote indigenous handcrafts of Jalisco, especially the state’s ceramic tradition. Tlaquepaque (), officially San Pedro Tlaquepaque, is a city and the surrounding municipality in the Mexican state of Jalisco.
