Nicaise De Keyser
Nicaise de Keyser (alternative first names: Nicaas, Nikaas of Nicasius; 26 August 1813, Zandvliet – 17 July 1887, Antwerp) was a Belgian painter of mainly history paintings and portraits who was one of the key figures in the Belgian Romantic-historical school of painting. Biography He received his painting tuition at the Antwerp Academy of Fine Arts under Jozef Jacobs and Mattheus Ignatius van Bree. Edouard Jean Conrad Hamman (24 September 1819 in Ostend Р30 March 1888 in Paris) was a Belgian painter and engraver who specialized in portraying scenes from the lives of famous artists, scholars and the nobility. Life and work He grew up in a well-to-do family. His father was the Town Receiver and secretary of the Chamber of Commerce in Ostend and created a fund for the benefit of needy fishermen and their families. Little is known of this period in his life, but he apparently became a student of Fran̤ois-Antoine Bossuet at an early age. In the school-year 1837/38, he was enrolled at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts (Antwerp). He was also a private student in the studio of Nicaise de Keyser. Jan Verhas or Jan Frans Verhas (9 January 1834 – 31 October 1896) was a Belgian painter of the Realist school. He was known for his portraits and genre paintings often depicting children of the Belgian bourgeoisie. Jan Verhas also painted history paintings, coastal landscapes, beach scenes, seascapes and the occasional still life of flowers. He was an important representative of the Realist movement in Belgium. Life Jan Verhas was born in Dendermonde as the son of Emmanuel Verhas. His father was a painter who for twenty years was a teacher at the local Academy and also served as a director of that Academy. Alexis Van Hamme (12 July 1818, Brussels - 9 October 1875, Brussels) was a Belgian painter; known primarily for historical genre scenes. Life and work He studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts (Antwerp), with Nicaise De Keyser and Henri Leys; both of whom had a decisive influence on his approach to painting. His works consist mainly of interior genre scenes, rendered in great detail. Most of them feature 17th-century settings, in the style of the old Dutch masters; especially those known as the fijnschilders. The physical details of his rooms and furnishings owe much to Gerrit Dou. Eliza Turck (1832–1891), was an English portrait (including miniatures), genre, bird and landscape painter, illustrator and writer. Life and work Turck was born in Islington in London, where she showed an early aptitude for art and received lessons from her mother, Anne Louisa Tielkens (b. 1800 London), who was a talented amateur artist. Biography He was born to the painter Jan Portielje and his wife Eulalie (née Lemaire, 1828–1903). His older brother, Gerard, was also a genre painter. His first art lessons came from his father. Wilhelm Ferdinand Pauwels ( ˆpÊŒu̯əls 13 April 1830, Ekeren – 26 March 1904, Dresden) was a Belgian history painter who lived and worked in Germany.
