Nguyễn Huệ Boulevard (Vietnamese language, Vietnamese: ''Đường Nguyễn Huệ'') is a boulevard in District 1, Ho Chi Minh City, District 1, downtown Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Being one of Saigon's oldest thoroughfares, the boulevard had undergone several transformations; it is currently a famous pedestrian street in the city. The boulevard stretches from Lê Thánh Tôn Street, right across from Ho Chi Minh City Hall, to Tôn Đức Thắng Boulevard (Bạch Đằng Quay, Saigon River waterfront). History The boulevard was originally a canal known as ''Kinh Lớn'' (Grand Canal), which linked the former Citadel of Saigon (the ) to Saigon River. In the first two decades after the Siege of Saigon, French conquest of Saigon, the canal remained an important waterway, as the central market was then located on its bank. Ho Chi Minh City Hall, officially called the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee Head Office (''Trụ sở Ủy ban Nhân dân Thành phố Hồ Chí Minh'') is the city hall of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. The hall was built in 1902–1908 in a French colonial style by architect Paul Gardès. Since 1975, the building has housed the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee, Ho Chi Minh City People's Council and Ho Chi Minh City People's Court. Although the building is not open to the public, it is popular for its photo opportunities. Tourists can take photographs outside and many people choose to do this at night when the building and its grounds are lit up.
