Ng Bi-chu
Juan Mei-shu or Ng Bi-chu (; 28 November 1928 – 28 November 2016) was a Taiwanese activist, musician, and researcher. Her father was a victim of the 228 Incident, an anti-government uprising that occurred in 1947 when she was eighteen. She spent much of her life studying the event and the subsequent White Terror period. Background had begun a career in print media in 1932, and by 1947 was working for the government-owned ''Taiwan Shin Sheng Daily News''. An editorial written in the paper shortly after 28 February 1947 attracted government attention and Juan was arrested on 12 March. This marked the last time Ng saw her father alive. The publication announced thirteen days later that Juan and editor Wu Chin-lien had been replaced. White Terror (Taiwan)
The White Terror () was the political repression of Taiwanese civilians under the Kuomintang (KMT)-ruled government. The period of White Terror is generally considered to have begun when martial law was declared in Taiwan on 19 May 1949, which was enabled by the 1948 Temporary Provisions against the Communist Rebellion, and ended on 21 September 1992 with the repeal of Article 100 of the Criminal Code, allowing for the prosecution of "anti-state" activities. The Temporary Provisions were repealed a year earlier on 22 April 1991 and martial law was lifted on 15 July 1987. The period of White Terror generally does not include the 228 Incident of 1947, in which the KMT killed at least 18,000 Taiwanese civilians in response to a popular uprising, and also summarily executed many local political and intellectual elites. Ong Iok-tek
Ông Io̍k-tek (, Taiwanese Hokkien, Taiwanese: Ông Io̍k-tek; ; 30 January 1924–9 September 1985) was a Taiwanese people, Taiwanese scholar and early leader of the Taiwan independence movement. He is considered to be an authority on the Min Nan language family and the Taiwanese Minnan, Taiwanese language. He was born in Tainan Prefecture (modern-day Tainan), during Taiwan under Japanese rule, Japanese rule, of a prominent family. He attended Tokyo Imperial University in 1943 but the ongoing World War II compelled him to return to Taiwan after a year. Following the war and Taiwan Retrocession Day, handover of Taiwan he took a critical attitude toward the Kuomintang, one accentuated by the killing of his brother, , a Tokyo-educated prosecutor, in the February 28 Incident. SETTV
Sanlih Entertainment Television or Sanlih E-Television (SET; ) is a nationwide cable TV network operated in Taiwan which was founded in May 1993. It also produces Taiwanese drama that are broadcast on free-to-air channels e.g. Taiwan Television (TTV). In terms of political orientation, Sanlih leans heavily towards the Pan-Green Coalition. Chinese Civil War
The Chinese Civil War was fought between the Kuomintang-led government of the Republic of China and forces of the Chinese Communist Party, continuing intermittently since 1 August 1927 until 7 December 1949 with a Communist victory on mainland China. The war is generally divided into two phases with an interlude: from August 1927 to 1937, the KMT-CCP Alliance collapsed during the Northern Expedition, and the Nationalists controlled most of China. From 1937 to 1945, hostilities were mostly put on hold as the Second United Front fought the Japanese invasion of China with eventual help from the Allies of World War II, but even then co-operation between the KMT and CCP was minimal and armed clashes between them were common.
