Next Move Handicap
The Next Move Handicap is an American Thoroughbred horse race run annually near the end of March at Aqueduct Racetrack in Ozone Park, Queens, New York. A Grade III event open to fillies and Mares, age three and older, it is contested on dirt over a distance of one mile and one furlong. It offers a purse of $100,000. Inaugurated in 1975, the race was restricted to three-year-old fillies at one mile in 1975. It was contested at a mile and three sixteenths from 1984 through 1994. The race is named in honor of the filly Next Move who was the American Champion Three-Year-Old Filly of 1950 and the American Co-Champion Older Female Horse in 1952. Aqueduct Racetrack
Aqueduct Racetrack is a Thoroughbred horse racing facility and casino in the South Ozone Park, Queens, South Ozone Park and Jamaica, Queens, Jamaica neighborhoods of Queens, New York City, United States. Aqueduct is the only racetrack located within New York City limits. Its racing meets are usually from late October/early November through April. The racetrack is located adjacent to a casino called Resorts World New York City. The track itself has three courses. The main track (dirt) has a circumference of . Inside of the main track are two courses: the Main Turf Course, and the Inner Turf Course measuring . The track has seating capacity of 17,000 and total capacity of 40,000. Richard Migliore
Richard Migliore (born March 14, 1964 in Babylon, New York) is a retired American jockey. He now works as a racing analyst for XBTV. He was nicknamed "The Mig," which is a type of Russian fighter jet, for his tenacious style of riding. He lives with his wife, Carmela, and children in Millbrook, New York. Early life Migliore grew up in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn. When he was 11, his family moved into a bigger house in Bay Shore, New York. On a bike ride as a child, Migliore drove down a road that ended at a dressage horse farm called Hunting Hollow Farm, which was managed by Hugh Cassidy. Cassidy gave Migliore his first chance to work with horses and his first riding lessons. Before he was 13 years old, Migliore and a few friends bought ponies to start a pony-ride business. Smok'n Frolic (foaled April 9th, 1999) is an American Thoroughbred racehorse and the winner of the Next Move Handicap. Career Smok'n Frolic's first race was on April 13, 2001, at Keeneland, where she came in fourth. She then won her next two races at Belmont Park, winning a Maiden Special Weight race and the 2001 Fashion Stakes She raced in the Spinaway Stakes coming in 2nd, and picked up her first graded win at the 2001 Tempted Stakes. She followed that victory up with another win the following month at the 2001 Demoiselle Stakes. She competed in multiple stakes races throughout 2002 but did not win any until the 2001 Cotillion Handicap in October. She started off 2003 with a January win at the Vessels Stallion Farm Distaff Stakes. She then picked up another graded win in March at the 2003 Next Move Handicap. Phipps Stable
Ogden Mills "Dinny" Phipps (September 18, 1940 – April 6, 2016) was an American financier, Thoroughbred racehorse industry executive, and horse breeder. Widely known by the nickname "Dinny," he was chairman of the family's Bessemer Trust until retiring in 1994, and served as its vice chairman. Claude McGaughey III
Claude R. "Shug" McGaughey III (born January 6, 1951) is an American Hall of Fame thoroughbred horse trainer. McGaughey began working as a trainer in 1979 and to date has won more than 240 graded stakes races. In 1986, he got his big break when Ogden Phipps hired him to train his stable of horses. In 1988, McGaughey won the Eclipse Award for Outstanding Trainer in the United States. Among his many wins, he has captured the Jockey Club Gold Cup three times, the Travers Stakes four times, and won the 1989 Belmont Stakes with Hall of Fame Champion Easy Goer as well as the 2013 Kentucky Derby with Orb. Edgar Prado
Edgar S. Prado (Lima, June 12, 1967) is a Peruvian-born American jockey, a U.S. Racing Hall of Fame jockey in thoroughbred horse racing. His big break came in 1997 when he won 536 races, making him the fourth rider in history to win 500 races in one year. Much of that success was gained in Maryland, where he ruled that circuit for several years. A resident of Hollywood, Florida in 2004 Prado became the 19th jockey in thoroughbred racing history to win 5,000 races. Kiaran P. McLaughlin (born November 15, 1960, in Lexington, Kentucky) is an American Thoroughbred racehorse trainer best known for training 2006 Horse of the Year Invasor. Background McLaughlin was born in an area of the country where horse racing and breeding is preeminent. One of his childhood friends was the son of trainer James Burchell and his first job was as a hotwalker. He was a student at the University of Kentucky for a year before he decided focus on pursuing a career in the Thoroughbred horse racing industry. He spent close to three years as an assistant for various trainers before going to work for U.S. Racing Hall of Fame trainer, D. Wayne Lukas in 1985. Alan Garcia (jockey)
Alan Garcia (born October 2, 1985) is a Peruvian thoroughbred horse racing jockey. He was Peru's leading apprentice jockey in 2003 and in that same year he began racing in the United States at the Meadowlands Racetrack where he was also the leading apprentice. His father and grandfather were both jockeys in Peru. He is currently married and lives in Port Saint Lucie, Florida, with his wife and 3 sons. Garcia got his big break in 2007 when he won the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf. This was his first ever Breeders' Cup ride.
